The Goliath Goli was a small van of the Borgward group that the Goliath plant in Bremen built from 1955 to 1961. It replaced the Goliath GD 750 and was the last three-wheeled truck built in Germany . The sales figures have been falling since 1957, a total of only 9904 Golis were produced.

technology

With three wheels and a water-cooled two-cylinder two-stroke engine that was started with a hand lever, Goliath continued a design that had long been a thing of the past at other vehicle manufacturers. The main reason for the use of only three wheels was the approximately 30% lower production price of the vehicle. The Goliath Goli stood out from the similar "Hanseat" model from its competitor Tempo with its rear-wheel drive and some primitive designs with a well-thought-out, relatively modern design. The deeply built-in engine behind the front wheel and the rear-wheel drive with small wheels and large-volume tires measuring 6.40 × 13 gave a cargo tricycle good stability and safe drive conditions.

First, an air-cooled engine with 16 HP (11.8 kW) was installed, but with thermal problems. The cause was the larger cylinder bore compared to the previous model, which made the cylinder liners so close together that the air cooling was insufficient. Therefore, from 1957 onwards, the Goliath GV 800's passively (without pump) water-cooled motor was used . Its engine output of only 15 HP (11 kW) was quite modest for a three-quarter-tonner - with a full load the driver was faced with a power-to-weight ratio of 120 kg / HP. To support the company's reputation, Goliath offered to replace air-cooled motors free of charge.

Other structural details were U-profile frame, all-steel driver's cab, swing arm with quarter - elliptical spring at the front and rigid axle with progressive leaf springs at the rear, worm steering and hydraulically operated drum brakes on all three wheels. The handbrake acts as a parking brake on the rear wheels.

Superstructures

The platform version was available with a low or high platform. The former enabled a loading volume of 6 m³. There was also the all-metal panel van and a box body . The external dimensions of the suitcase were 2200 mm × 1460 mm × 1230 mm. Depending on the structure and tires, the payload varied between 0.75 and 0.95 tons.
