The Hakkari-Yüksekova Selahaddin Eyyubi airport ( Turkish Hakkari Yüksekova Selahaddin Eyyubi Havalimanı ) is a Turkish airport in Yüksekova in Hakkari province , named after Sultan Saladin ( Turkish Selahaddin ). It is operated by the state DHMI . The airport can be reached by taxi, private car or airport bus.
history
Under the motto "An airport every 100 kilometers", the Turkish government has been building or having airports built in Turkey for several years. Construction of the airport began on July 18, 2010. The airport was one of the infrastructure projects for the economically weak south-east of Turkey. The proximity to Iran should also mean that Iranians use the airport. The construction cost 120 million Turkish lira.
Long before construction began, the airport became a target of sabotage by the banned Workers' Party (PKK) . Claiming that the airport was being used for military purposes, the PKK attacked three containers on the construction site with firearms and, two weeks before the groundbreaking, dropped a hand-made bomb from a passing car. Eleven trucks, a bulldozer and 17 telephones were set on fire. 25 workers were taken hostage. People who brought material to the construction site were kidnapped. Overall, the attacks caused a delay of 250 days.
On May 26, 2015, the airport was opened by the then Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu .
Airport grounds
The airport has a terminal with a capacity of 1,000,000 passengers per year on an area of 6600 m 2 , a control tower and an active paved runway equipped with an instrument flight landing system (ILS). The apron has a size of 265 m × 24 meters. There is a parking lot in front of the terminal.
The airport is currently accessible by car, taxi or buses.
