The Balıkesir-Merkez Airport ( Turkish Balıkesir Merkez Havalimanı ) is a Turkish airport near the city of Balıkesir . It is operated by the state DHMI . The city of Balıkesir assigned to him is about 5 kilometers away. It can be reached by taxi or private car.

history

Beginnings

The airport was opened for operations in 1998 and is currently open to military and civil aviation. After it was opened, it was used for civil and military purposes, but the operating company closed the airport for civil aviation in 2001 and reopened it for civil aviation on February 26, 2007. It has a terminal with a capacity of 100,000 passengers per year and a paved runway, which, however, does not have an instrument flight landing system (ILS). There are numerous hangars and military facilities for military operations.

New building

The city of Balıkesir has grown in recent years. The provincial capital does have an airport, but actually can't really use it, which is why you had to fly from Koca Seyit Airport , around 90 km away . In 2016, the state-owned DHMI decided to demolish the airport, build it from scratch and expand it.

The foundation stone was laid on December 15, 2016.

A terminal was built with a capacity of one million passengers per year and an area of 6,500 square meters. There is an open car park in front of the terminal. The apron was enlarged to 28,800 square meters and a taxiway running parallel to the runway was added. The airport is now equipped with an ARFF department, for example to carry out fire exercises and to put out the fire in an emergency. The new building was opened on February 10, 2020.
