The airport Kocaeli-Cengiz Topel (also Cengiz Topel Naval Air Station ; Turkish Kocaeli Cengiz Topel Havalimanı ; IATA code : KCO , ICAO code : LTBQ ) is a Turkish commercial and military airport in the city of İzmit and a base of the Turkish Navy . It is located about 2 kilometers east of the municipality of Köseköy . There is a transport connection to the D100 expressway and Otoyol 4 . The airport is operated by the state-owned DHMI .

history

The current site was used as a training center by the Turkish Air Force together with the Turkish Navy from around 1968 . The airport was opened in 1976 as an independent naval base and initially only had a military operating license. It is named after the pilot Cengiz Topel .

At the beginning of 2011, İzmit Airport was also opened to civil air traffic.
