The Aydın-Çıldır airport ( Turkish Aydın Çıldır Havalimanı ) is a small Turkish airport near the city of Aydın . It is used and operated exclusively by the Turkish Airlines Aviation Academy, a flight school. The airport can be reached by taxi or private car.

history

In 1956, Mustafa Çıldır turned to DHMI , the Turkish air traffic control, which is also responsible for the maintenance and construction of almost all Turkish airports. Çıldır owned 50 hectares of land that he wanted to donate, on condition that an airport be built there. In doing so, he complied with the request of the local population to build at least one airport for domestic flights. The DHMI gratefully accepted his gift and named the airport in Aydın after him - Aydın Çıldır. The airport opened in 1958.

At first there were a few flights to the airport, especially to Istanbul-Yeşilköy . The airport gradually lost its importance as passenger demand shrank. In the meantime, the airport had military status. The Jandarma used Aydın Çıldır as a base.

With the closure, the future of the airport was again uncertain. After several unsuccessful attempts by DHMI to use the airport again, the airport was finally put up for sale. Mustafa Çıldır's family reported before the sale in 2011 for the first time since construction and stated in an interview with a local newspaper that they were “disappointed” and “wanted the property back with the airport” that the airport would no longer exist .

In the same year, Turkish Airlines expressed interest in the airport. She announced that she wanted to relocate her training flights from Tekirdağ to Aydın Çıldır, since the weather conditions in Aydın are better than in Tekirdağ all year round, with 340-350 days of flying. After discussions with the Çıldır family and DHMI, the airport was sold to the Turkish Airlines Aviation Academy in 2012. After a small renovation of the airport, the first training flights began in 2013.

In 2015 a new terminal with classrooms and a hangar operated by Turkish Technic were built. In addition, new aircraft were procured.

Airport grounds

The airport has a terminal, control tower, apron that can accommodate 41 aircraft the size of a Cessna 172, and an active paved runway equipped with an instrument flight landing system (ILS). There is a parking lot in front of the terminal. The airport was one of the first handicapped accessible airports in Turkey.
