The Kastamonu Airport (IATA: KFS , ICAO: LTAL , Turkish Kastamonu Uzunyazı Havalimanı ) is a Turkish airport south of the city of Kastamonu .

history

The airport was completed in 1959. Turkish Airlines initially offered scheduled flights to Istanbul, but had to discontinue them due to low demand. It was reopened in 1990 under the motto “An airport for every province”. Although the runway was extended from 1000 meters to 2400 meters in 1994, it was not used except for a few test and weather flights . The area served as a pasture and picnic area. For a time, a wedding hall was operated there or illegal car races were carried out.

Since 2010 there have been efforts to restore the airport to its original purpose. After several comprehensive reports, it was found that the old building did not meet today's safety standards and that it would be more economical to build a new airport building. The airport was put back into operation on July 5, 2013 and officially inaugurated on July 19, 2013 by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . The investment for the reopening amounted to 110 million TL .
