The Çukurova regional airport is an airport under construction. It will be built in the Çukurova valley between Adana and Tarsus and will be one of the largest airports in Turkey. Çukurova will be Turkey's second regional airport after Kütahya-Zafer airport .

background

One of the reasons for the construction of this airport was the outdated and congested Adana Airport . In terms of passenger volume, this is the sixth largest airport in Turkey. The Turkish government has long been aiming for a metropolitan region to which the provinces of Mersin , Adana and Osmaniye should belong. As one of the largest airports in Turkey, the airport would handle passengers from the three provinces, and it would also transport goods at home and abroad. Compared to other Turkish cities, Adana has an enormous number of companies that are mainly active in manufacturing and agriculture. In addition, the Çukurova region is very attractive in terms of history, culture and nature, which is why one would like to boost tourism. The airport should therefore boost the economy in this metropolitan region in the medium term.

Ownership and operation

The airport is being built according to the build-operate-transfer principle. A consortium consisting of the construction companies Skyline and Zonguldak Özel Sivil Havacılık was awarded the contract on January 26, 2012. The airport is expected to be handed over to the state 9 years and 10 months after opening, unless the operating company requests an extension. The DHMI is responsible for air traffic control and security in general .

construction

The foundation stone was laid on May 29, 2013. In January 2019, the substructure and the necessary infrastructure were completed, so that construction of the terminal could begin in February 2019. The slope was ready in August 2018. The terminal is to have a glass facade. The roof will be planted with greenery, so that the airport should fit in with the surrounding fields. In the first stage, the airport will have a capacity of 10 million passengers per year. In a second stage, this number is to be increased to 30 million. The airport was designed by the Turkish architect Emre Arolat . The newspaper Hürriyet put the costs at 357 million euros.
