Yüksekova in winter

Yüksekova ( Syriac Aramaic ܓܒܼܪ Gawar , alternative spelling ܓܵܒܼܵܪ; Kurdish Gever ) is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Hakkâri in southeastern Turkey . In 1934 what was then Gever received the status of a Belediye . The name was changed to Yüksekova two years later. The city is the largest in the province and is home to over half of the district's population (2018: 58.1%).

The district borders in the north on the province of Van and in the west on the central district ( Merkez ) and the district Çukurca . Iran in the east and Iraq in the south form the border. Yüksekova means plateau and is located at an altitude of almost 2000 m. The extent of the plateau is 15 by 40 km. The winters are long and hard and, despite the fertile soil, agricultural yields are low due to the low temperatures.
