Çukurca ( Kurdish : Çelê ) is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Hakkari in southeastern Turkey . The city is located about 35 kilometers south of the provincial capital Hakkâri . The original name of Çukurca was Çal.

The district of Çukurca is located in the west of the province and borders in the north on the central district ( Merkez ) and in the southeast on the district Yüksekova . In the west he has the province of Şırnak as a neighbor, in the south Iraq .

Çukurca has been a district since 1953 and, in addition to the district town, consists of eight villages ( Köy ) with an average of 952 residents. Three of the villages have more than a thousand inhabitants: Çığlı (2,367), Gündeş (2,356) and Üzümlü (1,601 pop.). With 24 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district has the lowest population density .

history

On the morning of October 19, 2011, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) attacked a Turkish military post in Çukurca on the Iraqi border in the wake of the Turkey-PKK conflict, killing 24 soldiers and wounding 18. The attack was the most loss-making for the Turkish army since 1993. As a direct reaction, Turkish commandos invaded northern Iraq in battalion strength .
