The company Luftschiffbau Schütte-Lanz was involved in the construction of airships , and later also airplanes and automobiles. It was Ferdinand von Zeppelin's greatest competition in the field of rigid airship construction before and during the First World War . Although the Schütte-Lanz airships were superior to the zeppelins in many ways, the airship builder was never able to celebrate Zeppelin's successes.

history

The company was founded by the industrialist Karl Lanz and the engineer Johann Schütte on April 22, 1909 in Rheinau . The production facility was relocated to Brühl near Mannheim and was later expanded to include another plant in Zeesen and Leipzig. The main difference between the airships and those of the Zeppelin type lay in their construction material. The frame was made of wood. Only later were four transport airships and one research airship planned for the post-war period , which, like the Zeppelin airships, were to have a duraluminium skeleton.

Until then, however, Luftschiffbau Schütte-Lanz had only manufactured military airships .

From April 1, 1916 to April 15, 1925, there was a branch in Zeesen in Brandenburg with its own airship yard and aircraft construction. For this purpose, the aircraft construction department was relocated from the main plant in Mannheim-Rheinau to Zeesen in spring 1916. A total of three airships and over 500 aircraft were built in Zeesen. After the First World War, production had to be stopped in 1921 in accordance with the provisions of the Versailles Treaty . This meant the end of the airship construction company, and Luftschiffbau Schütte-Lanz was dissolved in mid-1925.

Share of more than 1,000 marks in Schütte-Lanz-Werke AG in Zeesen on August 11, 1923

From 1920 to 1924. A spinoff built, the Schütte-Lanz-Werke AG in Zeesen , bodies of automobiles under the name SL 1922 to 1924 was also a passenger car with a 4/14 hp engine, under the name Schütte-Lanz was offered .

It was possible to transfer the technological experience from airship construction to other business areas, mainly in plywood construction . By the end of 2007, the company was as Finnforest Schütte-Lanz GmbH , headquartered in Bruehl near Mannheim on boarding plates specialized. After the end of operations, the production facilities were dismantled. The site is currently being marketed under the name "Gewerbepark Schütte-Lanz". The last remaining listed halls from 1911 are now waiting for better times. On October 11, 2013 the chimney was blown up because the future traders did not want a chimney.

In Berlin-Lichterfelde , the former Steinstrasse has been called Schütte-Lanz-Strasse since 1933 . There is the Lilienthalpark with the Lilienthal monument .

At the former location in Zeesen, the “Schütte-Lanz Gewerbepark” is a reminder of the former production site. The last buildings in the plant were demolished in March 2013.
