from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinz Joachim Nowarra (born December 24, 1912 in Berlin ; † November 4, 1992 in Harreshausen ) was a German author of non-fiction books on aviation history.

life and work

Nowarra attended the Treitschke School in Berlin-Wilmersdorf from 1919 to 1928 and then completed an apprenticeship as a clerk . From 1930 to the end of 1933 he was unemployed and then initially worked as an office clerk and cashier until January 1936. Until 1940 he worked as a warehouse accountant and scheduler at Siemens-Schuckertwerke . From 1941 to mid-1942 he worked for the Gesellschaft für Luftfahrtbedarf in Berlin in spare parts management for the Bf 109 , and from January 1942 also for the Ju 88 . From mid-1942 he was assigned to the Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke , Leipzig shipyard, where he was later responsible for the Ju 188 .

After 1945 Nowarra worked in various professions in Berlin until he moved to Harreshausen in June 1968. Until the end of 1977 he worked in the “Market Research and Traffic Development” department at Frankfurt Airport , where he was responsible for the internal information service and the archive. In 1978 he retired.

Nowarra had made a name for himself as a writer on aviation topics since 1958 . He wrote his first major publication together with the American air force officer Kimbrough S. Brown for the British special publisher Harleyford on the German fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen under the title Von Richthofen and the Flying Circus . He published a total of around 75 books and brochures plus around 34 articles in specialist journals, around a third of them in English. These included issues of the penny booklet series Fliegergeschichten and Der Landser . Nowarra also collected pictures and photographs on the subject of aviation. After 1945 , Willi Hackenberger , the secretary of the veteran pilot organization Alte Adler , and the German Air Force General Alfred Keller, helped him in particular . At the time of his death, Nowarra's collection is said to have included around 38,000 images.
