Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test (2017) 5 Stars

The model generation seven of the BMW 5 series (internal series designations G30 , G31 , G38 ) is a passenger car that has been available as a notchback sedan with normal and long wheelbase and as a station wagon since 2017. It replaces the F10 model, which has been produced since the beginning of 2010 . The outwardly similar BMW M5 ( F90 ) has been available since the beginning of 2018.

Model history

The notchback version G30 was presented on October 13, 2016 and has been on sale since February 11, 2017. The vehicle is built at the BMW plant in Dingolfing and at Magna Steyr in Graz.

The station wagon version G31 ( Touring ) was presented on February 1, 2017, and had its formal trade fair premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2017. The G31 has been on the market since May 20, 2017.

Formally at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2017, BMW presented the G38 long version of the sedan intended exclusively for the Chinese market . It has a 133 mm longer wheelbase than the basic version and is manufactured by BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. made in Shenyang .

The BMW M5, which is similar to the BMW G30, was formally shown for the first time at a vehicle fair at the IAA 2017 and has been available since the beginning of 2018. Internal name is F90 .

During the BMW event #NEXTgen in summer 2019, the G30-based test vehicle with an electric drive ("Power BEV") was shown, the drive unit of which was manufactured without the use of rare earths (such as neodymium ).

On May 27, 2020, BMW presented a revised version of the series. It went on sale in July 2020.

technology

The vehicle was how the current BMW 7 (G11 / G12) and Z4 (G29) on the CLAR - platform realized.

Adaptive LED headlights enable a light range of up to 500 meters. Non-adaptive LED headlights are standard equipment.

The M550d and M550i sedans will be available with laser light from autumn 2019; its high beam has a range of 650 meters.

body

The body is made of a mixed aluminum-steel construction, which contributes to weight savings of up to 100 kg compared to the previous models, 130 kg for the long version. As with the BMW i8, the dashboard support is made of magnesium (this means that the weight is 2 kg less than on the predecessor).

The drag coefficient ( c w ) of the sedan reaches up to 0.22, making the BMW 520d Efficient Dynamics Edition one of the most aerodynamically efficient series sedans . For this purpose, an air flap is used in the radiator grille, which closes when there is little need for cooling air; referred to by BMW as "Active Air Stream Kidney". The other models have c w values of 0.23 and 0.25.

Compared to its predecessor, the CO 2 balance has been improved by up to 14%. For this purpose, regenerative energies, recyclates in thermoplastics and secondary aluminum are used in production.

Renewable kenaf fibers are also used for the interior cladding .

landing gear

As with the predecessor, the front wheels are guided on double wishbones . The rear axle is a five-link construction largely made of aluminum . All-wheel steering ("Integral Active Steering") is available on request , which allows the rear wheels a steering angle of up to 3 degrees, depending on the speed, with the rear wheels turning in the opposite direction to the front wheels under 60 km / h. This improves maneuverability and increases agility. At high speeds, the turning of the rear wheels follows that of the front wheels, which increases driving stability.

Engines and gears

At the market launch in February 2017, two gasoline engines and two diesel engines were initially available. One month later, the plug-in hybrid known from the 3 series was introduced. In addition, the 520d came in an economical Efficient Dynamics Edition and the preliminary top model M550i xDrive with 340 kW (462 PS). With the exception of the engines in the M models, the gasoline engines now also come from the new engine kit. With the exception of the 520d, for which a 6-speed manual transmission was also available, all other G30s are only supplied with an 8-speed ZF automatic converter transmission . As of summer 2018, the manually shiftable six-speed gearbox was taken out of the range, the G30 has only been available with a converter gearbox since then.

The diesel engines apart from the 520d Efficient Dynamics Edition and 525d and the gasoline engines apart from the 520i can be supplied with xDrive all-wheel drive.

In 2019, a variant with all-wheel drive was introduced for the 530e iPerformance in addition to the rear-wheel drive variant. In addition, the capacity of the battery has been increased. From November 2019, the 520d models will have 48-volt mild hybrid technology with expanded recuperation options as standard equipment. From November 2020, the 545e xDrive will also be available as a further plug-in hybrid version.

Furnishing

The G30 has an intelligent start-stop system that works depending on the traffic situation; the "Business" navigation system is part of the standard equipment. In the instrument panel, instead of the four analog instruments with a high-resolution 5.7 "display, a multifunctional 12.3" instrument display (high-resolution color display in black panel technology ) is available on request . A head-up display is available as an option , the projected area of which has been enlarged by 70 percent.

On request, the G30 can also be supplied with the following driver assistance systems , which have been adopted from the 7 series (G11) : evasive, cross traffic, lane change and lane departure warning. The 5 Series supports partially autonomous driving in the areas of steering, braking and accelerating.
