The BMW 1 Series is a compact class vehicle from BMW and the automaker's entry-level model. In-house, the designations F20 for the five-door and F21 for the three-door variant are used. The 1 series is the successor to the E87 series . The car has rear-wheel drive , which is rare in this segment. The official launch of the five-door F20 took place on June 5, 2011; Sales started on September 17, 2011. The three-door F21 followed in September 2012.

At the end of February 2017, BMW launched the F52 notchback sedan of the 1 series in China . In contrast to the hatchback variant, this, like the second generation of the X1, is based on the BMW UKL2 platform and is therefore offered with front-wheel drive as standard .

Production of the F20 ended at the end of June 2019. The successor with the designation F40 was presented on May 27, 2019 and came onto the market in September 2019.

Model history

General

The first model of the series was the five-door F20 with hatchback , the formal, public premiere of which took place at the 2011 IAA. The design comes from Nico Huet. The three-door F21, which was formally shown publicly for the first time at the AMI 2012 in Leipzig, followed in September 2012. The platform is shared by the second 1-series with the BMW 3-series ( F30 ), which has been sold since the beginning of 2012 . Since this new edition, BMW has only sold the hatchback sedans under the name “1 Series”. The coupé (E82) and convertible (E88) of the previous generation were replaced by the 2 series from spring 2014 .

The vehicles are manufactured in the BMW plant in Regensburg and since March 2012 also in the BMW plant in Leipzig . A total of 1,248,737 1-series F20s had been delivered by the end of production in 2019.

Production periods

  • Five-door (F20): since June 2011
  • Three-door (F21): since July 2012

Major differences to the predecessor

  • Two equipment lines ( Sport Line and Urban Line ) were already available when it was launched .
  • The new four-cylinder gasoline engines now have a turbocharger . The displacement was reduced to 1.6 liters.
  • The 6-speed automatic transmission will be replaced by the eight-speed ZF-8HP automatic transmission from ZF Friedrichshafen (special equipment).
  • The iDrive system is now also available without a navigation system (Radio Professional , special equipment up to the first model series). The “Professional” radio has been part of the basic equipment since the facelift.
  • For the first time in a BMW car, the side indicators are located in the housings of the exterior mirrors.
  • There is an Eco-Pro mode which helps the driver to save fuel.
  • Assistants such as the parking assistant, lane departure warning, collision warning, reversing camera and speed limit info are available as special equipment for the 1 Series (known from the 5 Series BMW ).
  • The F20 is the first BMW model to receive the ConnectedDrive extension Real-Time Traffic Information (RTTI). This online traffic situation service uses anonymized mobile phone movement data to determine the traffic flow for optimized route calculations. In addition to motorways, it also covers country and urban roads. The principle is similar to the competing system TomTom Traffic .

Dimensions

With a length of 4324 mm, the 1 Series has grown by 85 mm compared to its predecessor. The wheelbase has been increased by 30 mm and the track width by 51 mm (front) and 72 mm (rear). The enlargement benefits passengers in the back seat (legroom there: +21 mm).

Facelift

The revised version of the 1 Series was presented in January 2015 and officially went on sale on March 28, 2015.

Both the BMW kidney grille and the air intakes became larger and were given a new shape. The headlights have become flatter and have LED daytime running lights as standard; For the first time, it is optionally available in a full LED version. Since the facelift, there have been rear lights made of light-emitting diodes, which have been redesigned along with the tailgate. The rear lights are in two parts and are arranged in the typical BMW L-shape.

BMW provided the upper part of the center console with chrome-plated decorative frames around the control consoles for the radio and air conditioning. The standard equipment has also been supplemented by additional assistance systems, including rain sensors, automatic air conditioning, the BMW Professional radio with iDrive controller and 6.5-inch display, as well as a separate pressure display for each tire. New equipment packages offer options for customization. Also new is an optional driver assistance system: a radar-based active cruise control with a stop-start system adapts to the traffic ahead. Furthermore, this parking assistant is also capable of lateral parking.

For the first time, BMW is offering a three-cylinder engine. The 118i's turbocharged gasoline engine has an output of up to 100 kW (136 hp) and its maximum torque is 220 Newton meters. With the 116d and 116d Efficient Dynamics models , three-cylinder diesels are still available. Both produce up to 85 kW (116 hp) with a maximum torque of 270 Newton meters. The fuel consumption of the 116d Efficient Dynamics is stated as 3.8 liters and thus around 0.3 liters less and has a top speed of 195 km / h that is 5 km / h lower.

In all other engines, the output has been increased and consumption and pollutant emissions have been reduced.

For model year 2017 there were revisions in the interior.

Furnishing

The Sport Line and Urban Line equipment lines are optionally available as standard equipment.

Exterior paintwork

There was a choice of three solid colors and five metallic colors for the market launch.

technology

Vehicle set-up

A driving experience switch on the center console can be used to change engine characteristics, driving stability control, steering characteristics and the shift program as well as the shift dynamics of the automatic transmission. The modes Comfort , Sport and Eco Pro are available. There is also a Sport + mode in conjunction with certain optional extras .

In vehicles that are equipped with the Professional or Sportline navigation system , the current engine power and torque values can be shown in the center console display.

Steering, chassis and brakes

Electromechanical power steering is standard in all versions . Servotronic (speed-dependent steering assistance) or variable sports steering are available as options. The overall steering ratio is 15.0: 1.

The front suspension consists of MacPherson struts , each with two wishbones articulated next to one another on the wheel carrier in lightweight aluminum (double-jointed tension strut axle). The rear axle consists (on each side) of five links in lightweight steel construction and an elastically mounted subframe .

All models have rear-wheel drive as standard . The all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive has been optionally available for the 120d and M135i since September 2012 .

The front brake system works with internally ventilated single-piston floating caliper disc brakes. Single-piston floating caliper disc brakes are also installed at the rear. The F20 has a recuperation brake: the battery is mainly charged by the generator when braking and coasting.

Optional 8-speed automatic transmission

As an option, BMW offers an eight- speed automatic instead of the manual transmission. Due to the wide spread of the gears, the speed level and the interior noise level have been reduced at high speeds. Despite the increase from six to eight levels of the ZF-8HP automatic, additional components were not required. Weight and dimensions increased only slightly compared to the ZF-6HP automatic transmission. The eight-speed automatic can skip gear steps, so it can shift from the eighth to the second step in the appropriate driving situation and only has to open one clutch. The transmission is manufactured by ZF Friedrichshafen . It is not available for the 116d EfficientDynamics Edition, 114i, and 114d.

multimedia

The series 1 is equipped with a radio with Bluetooth, six loudspeakers and an aux-in connection as standard. A CD drive is optionally available.

A DVD changer, a DAB receiver or a Harman Kardon loudspeaker system with 12 loudspeakers and an output of 360 watts are available. The iDrive operating system is available in conjunction with a navigation system or the Professional radio . It has a high-resolution screen measuring 6.5 "or 8.8" on the dashboard. Since the facelift in 2015, the "Professional" radio has been standard, and thus also the iDrive.

With the optional BMW apps , iPhone owners can receive web radio stations and view Facebook and Twitter entries on the on-board monitor. There is also full Internet access.

safety

The BMW F20 have anti-lock brakes (ABS) with brake assist and cornering brake control , 3-point seat belts for all five seats, the front two with belt tensioners and belt force limiters , a vehicle dynamics control (Electronic Stability Control, ESP) with traction control (BMW Dynamic Stability Control , DSC or Dynamic Traction Control , called DTC), as well as six airbags (driver / front passenger, two side airbags and continuous head airbags). In order to make it easier to recognize very strong braking, the brake lights start to flash.

Child seats can only be securely attached to the back seat on the outside seats. Isofix brackets are also available there. An airbag that can be switched off is available as standard for the front passenger seat.

A lane departure warning and a collision warning are available for a surcharge. However, there is no intervention in the driving process (counter-steering or braking).

The vehicle received five stars in the 2011 EuroNCAP crash test. The partial ratings are 91% for occupant protection, 83% for child safety, 63% for pedestrian protection and 86% for active safety.

Engines

The 116d EfficientDynamics Edition was added to the engine range in March 2012 . Thanks to additional consumption-reducing measures, this model is the first BMW automobile to achieve CO 2 emissions of below 100 g / km in the ECE driving cycle.

The 114i and the M135i were available from September 2012.

The M135i (or later the M140i) and the 120d have also been available with the xDrive all-wheel drive system since November 2012. The 120d can be combined with an automatic transmission from March 2015. It has also been available for the 118d since July 2013.

In addition, the 118i and 120d models will also be available for the three-door model from November 2012. The 114d followed later with a weaker variant of the 116d engine.

In the 2015 facelift, the 114d is currently not being offered, so the compact class starts with the 116d with 85 kW (116 hp) and for the first time with a 3-cylinder diesel engine.

The B48 engine has been used in the 120i since July 2016, the M135i model replaced by the M140i with B58 engine.

Ecological aspects

The term BMW EfficientDynamics brings together several technical innovations that result in lower fuel consumption while at the same time increasing performance. In addition, the 1 Series has an Eco-Pro mode. A more fuel-efficient driving style is supported by adapting the drive control and the operation of the heating and air conditioning system, heated exterior mirrors and heated seats as well as information to the driver via the display in the middle of the cockpit (if available).

The gasoline engines work with spray-guided direct injection (High Precision Injection) and a twin-scroll turbocharger ( TwinPower -Turbo) with two exhaust gas inlet openings.

The diesel models are fitted with a particle filter as standard and their turbocharger has adjustable guide vanes at the turbine inlet (VTG charger).
