Traffic situation service
A traffic situation service (also traffic information service) is a service that provides information about the current traffic situation (volume, obstructions, traffic jams) via television, radio, radio, telephone, internet and other media.
The use of such services is becoming increasingly important with the increase in traffic (especially in road traffic).
Use in road traffic
The first reports of traffic jams were broadcast by radio stations. Reports from the police, automobile clubs, human traffic jam reports and various sensors installed on the streets served as a source of information. All these messages later flowed into the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) system, which is now supported by almost all navigation systems. The system is broadcast by various radio stations via VHF radio. However, the sources and the transmission path have proven to be too slow, too imprecise and too error-prone. Many traffic jams are reported too late or incorrectly. In addition, almost only motorways are considered. Country roads and inner cities are left out.
Due to the spread of cellular internet , TomTom developed TomTom HD Traffic together with Vodafone . This service enables almost complete monitoring of busy roads with the help of the existing mobile phone infrastructure. The movement data of the mobile radio devices carried in the vehicles (especially mobile phones) are recorded anonymously and transmitted to a central point. Traffic profiles are created from the data and transmitted directly to the TomTom live navigation devices connected to the Internet. This enables a more precise calculation of the arrival time and a more effective traffic jam avoidance. TomTom promises to update the data every two minutes.
The floating car data model operated by ADAC follows the same approach . Movement data from telematics systems are processed here. The central recording and evaluation of the vehicle-supported telematics data is continuously supplied with data through anonymized information from the telematics providers ENAiKOON , GPSoverIP and Punch Telematix . Based on this data, the traffic density of vehicles on public roads can be evaluated spatially and chronologically. The result is more precise and timely traffic jam reports and traffic management that is dependent on traffic density.
In summer 2011, Audi and BMW will be the first car manufacturers to start using similar online traffic information systems in the integrated navigation systems. Mercedes-Benz followed suit in 2013. These three automobile manufacturers operate the Here navigation system together .
Data sources
- police
- Road maintenance
- Automobile clubs
- Traffic jam indicator
- Road sensors (induction loops, light barriers, cameras)
- Floating Phone Data (FPD) - position and movement detection by the mobile network provider by transferring the cell of the mobile recipient
-
Floating Car Data (FCD) or Floating Device Data (FDD) - Receiver-side position and movement detection by a satellite-based navigation system (mostly GPS) and uploading of the data to the service provider (mostly using EDGE / UMTS) :
- GPS online receiver (navigation devices and smartphone applications)
- Fleet vehicles from taxi and logistics companies and other participating road transport service providers
- Toll system transponder ( on-board units (OBU))
