Floating phone data

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Floating Phone Data ( FPD for short , sometimes also Cellular Floating Vehicle Data ) describes the position and movement detection of mobile devices by the provider .

In contrast to active mobile phone location (provided by the provider) or GPS logging (by the user, partly passively through the telephone or additional software), in which the position can be determined within a few meters depending on the method used, the position of Floating Phone Data is determined by the provider via the login processes in the radio cells and is therefore significantly less precise - the method is, however, well suited to determining the flow of traffic on highways, and with a high density of radio cells also on larger inner-city streets. It is also often mentioned in connection with floating car data , as it supplements this service at low cost (no investment / configuration in end-user devices or vehicles necessary).

As a rule, the network operator records the movement data using monitoring systems that are usually in place anyway, anonymizes them and then forwards them to a traffic situation service. In Germany, Vodafone's mobile phone movement data is marketed by TomTom under the name "HD Traffic" , while Telefónica Germany (O 2 ) supplies data to INRIX PrecisionTraffic .

Individual evidence

  1. TomTom relies on mobile phone users for the Navi One XL HD Traffic: the new HD Traffic service is supposed to provide users with up to five times more current traffic information.
