Successor:

The BMW B38 is a three-cylinder in - line engine ( gasoline engine ) made by the car manufacturer BMW . Together with the B48 and B58 ( four - or six-cylinder engine ) and the two diesel engines B37 and B47 (three- and four-cylinder), he is one of the imported 2013/2014 modular engines from BMW. The BMW plant in Munich is the lead plant for the B38, B48 and B58 engines. The modular engines are installed in both BMW and Mini models. This means that the engines previously developed in cooperation between BMW and the PSA Group are gradually being replaced in the mini models.

construction

The crankcase (engine block) in "closed-deck construction" consists of aluminum, with the cylinder liners coated with a hard iron alloy. As with the M20 introduced in 1977, the cylinder center distance is 91 mm. The individual cubic capacity is a maximum of 500 cm³. The B38 engine has a turbocharger with a water-cooled aluminum housing, direct injection and camshaft adjustment , from 1.5 l displacement the valve control " Valvetronic " with valve lift adjustable via adjustable intermediate levers and roller rocker levers . The stroke-to-bore ratio is 1.15 for all variants. This helps ensure that the maximum torque is already below 1400 rpm - except for the i8 variant. A balance shaft is built in to absorb first-order vibrations , which runs in needle bearings for low friction.

Since April 2015, after failures of the 100 kW variant in user profiles with high clutch usage, a 360-degree flange bearing has been installed as the axial bearing of the crankshaft instead of a half-shell bearing.

Since 2018, the mini versions have had 10 Nm higher torques after - together with other changes - the injection pressure could be increased from 200 to 350 bar. Carbon fiber-reinforced material is used for the plastic cover of the engine, which on the one hand makes it lighter and on the other allows the use of offcuts from the production of the i-models.

From March 2018 or May 2018 (i8), the BMW variants will receive a gasoline particulate filter (OPF) , and from July 2018 also the mini variants, so that the Euro 6d-Temp standard is met.
