The BMW N46 is an in-line four-cylinder gasoline engine from the car manufacturer BMW , it replaced the N42 . The N46 made its debut in the 3 Series ( BMW E46 ) in 2003 and was offered in the E87 120i from 9/2004 .

Fine tuning was important when developing the N46. The main design features of the N42 have been adopted. The following assemblies were changed:

  • Balancer shafts
  • Connecting rod
  • Spark plugs
  • Vacuum pump
  • Roller rocker arm
  • Cylinder head cover
  • new digital engine electronics (DME) Bosch MEV 9.2 with integrated Valvetronic control unit

In contrast to its predecessor, the amount of fuel was now regulated via the lambda sensors even in full load operation. This lowered fuel consumption and reduced the content of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (H m C n ), nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and, above all, benzene in the exhaust gas. Benzene is considered to be carcinogenic.

In 2006 the N46 was modified again (including the DME Bosch MV17.4.6) and offered as the N46N. It is intended for countries with high sulfur concentrations in fuel, in which the N43 cannot be used.

The engine without Valvetronic is also available as the N45 with 1.6 and 2.0 liter displacement.
