The BMW M54 is a series of in- line six-cylinder engines with four-valve technology that debuted in 2000. It is the further development of the BMW M52 and was replaced by the BMW N52 in 2004. The M54 engines have camshaft adjustment for the intake and exhaust sides ( stepless double VANOS ). The crankcase and cylinder head are made of aluminum.

Compared to the predecessor M52, the displacement of the M54B22 and the M54B30 has been increased by 0.2 l each with a slightly longer stroke. The sometimes significant increases in performance (28 kW in the case of the 3-liter machine) were largely achieved by reducing the flow resistance on the inlet and outlet side of the engine.

According to BMW, the resonance intake system introduced in 1998 in the M52TU should enable a high degree of cylinder filling over a broader speed range by means of a speed-dependent, two-stage variation of the effective intake manifold length and thus ensure improved elasticity. The variable control of the exhaust valves should also optimize the torque in the lower speed range.

The M54 was installed in the Z4 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0 models from 2002 to 2005. From 2006, the M54 built into the Z4 was replaced by the N52 engine. It was also used in the 3 Series E46 as 320i, 325i and 330i, in the 5 Series E39 as 520i, 525i and 530i, in the 5 Series E60 as 520i, 525i and 530i and in the 7 Series E65 as the 730i. It was installed in the Z3 from 2000 to 2002 as the 2.2i and 3.0i.

From 2001 to 2003, the 3-liter version M54B30 was on the annual list of “the 10 Best Engines” by the American specialist magazine “Ward's Auto World”.

The first introduced M54 variant with 3 liter displacement and 170 kW / 231 PS met the exhaust emission limits D4 and ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) ahead of schedule . As an emission-optimized variant of the BMW M54, the BMW M56 met the even stricter SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) emissions standard .
