The BMW N43 is a gasoline engine series from the car manufacturer BMW with four cylinders in an in-line arrangement . The light alloy engine has two overhead camshafts and 16 valves. It has spray- guided direct petrol injection that works in the partial load range in lean operation. Compared to its predecessor, the N45 , the 116i was able to achieve an increase in output of six percent while at the same time reducing consumption by 23%. Since low-sulfur gasoline is required for lean operation, the N43 could not be offered on many markets. The predecessor engines N45 and N46 were therefore offered in modified form on these markets .

The N46B20 is identical to the N43B20 in many parts, e.g. B. the crankshaft or the oil pan. From 2011 the N43 was replaced by the N13 .
The N43 replaced the technically similar, but without direct injection, BMW N42 engine, which was used from 2001 to 2004. In addition, the N43 was equipped with a start-stop system and brake energy recovery (see also BMW EfficientDynamics ).
