The first generation of the 1 series (internal: E81 three-door, E82 coupé, E87 five-door, E88 convertible) from the car manufacturer BMW was presented as a five-door in March 2004, introduced in September 2004 and belongs to the compact class . The rear-wheel drive car is the manufacturer's entry-level model.

The three-door variant went on sale at the end of May 2007. The coupé followed at the end of November 2007, and in April 2008 the convertible was the last model in the series to hit the market.

The five-door was manufactured in the Regensburg plant , the remaining variants in the BMW plant in Leipzig . In April 2010 that totaled 1,000,000. Model, a three-door 118d, produced at the BMW plant in Leipzig.

In June 2011, the five-door hatchback was first replaced by its successor, the F20 . The three-door variant F21 followed on September 22, 2012.

Production of the coupé and convertible ended in October 2013. Both are being replaced by the 2 Series , which first appeared as a coupe in March 2014.

Model history

General

Rear view

In the tradition of the manufacturer, but atypical for the compact class, the engine is installed lengthways behind the front axle and drives the rear wheels . On the one hand, this increases production costs and, on the other hand, it helps to differentiate oneself from competitive products by bringing BMW's essential unique design features into the compact class.

The 1 Series is the only vehicle in the compact class that can also be equipped with an in- line six-cylinder engine thanks to its rear-wheel drive .

The design is based on the larger 3-series model . As is typical for BMW, the front has the striking BMW kidney grille and the C- pillar the Hofmeister kink . A stretched bonnet, a long wheelbase and short overhangs illustrate the manufacturer's sporty aspirations.

Facelift

In March 2007, the 1 Series was revised as part of a facelift: The front view differs mainly through a wider air inlet with a horizontal decorative strip and integrated rectangular fog lights . The bi-xenon version of the headlights received light rings with daytime running lights . The rear view is characterized by a new graphic of the rear lights with LED technology and a wider-looking rear apron. In the interior, among other things, the center console was redesigned. Door mirrors, integrated door pockets and chrome applications were added, qualities and equipment from the higher series found their way.

With the facelift, a number of efficiency measures were introduced as part of the EfficientDynamics packages - such as new gasoline engines with direct injection and stratified charging or an automatic start-stop system .

The following changes were made at the beginning of the 2009 model year: Technical adjustments were made to the optional navigation system Professional , which has been provided with an internal hard drive and hot keys and is now being supplied by Harman-Becker (previously: Siemens-VDO ). In addition, the new generation of the BMW iDrive including internet access (special equipment) also found its way into the 1 Series. Steering wheel heating and a high beam assistant are also available as new optional extras. The previously standard speed-dependent Servotronic power steering and run-flat tires ( RFT ) are now optional.

safety

In addition to an anti-lock braking system with Brake Assist and Cornering Brake Control (increases driving stability when braking lightly in fast corners), belt tensioners , an electronic stability program with traction control (with BMW Dynamic Stability Control, DSC or Dynamic Traction Control , Called DTC), as well as a total of six airbags (driver / front passenger, two side airbags and head airbag front and rear). When Euro NCAP - Crash Test in 2004 he was awarded in the assessment of occupant safety the maximum of five stars (33 points) and in the child safety three stars out of five (35 points). Pedestrian safety was rated with two points and one of four possible stars.

Child seats can only be securely attached to the back seat on the outside seats. Isofix brackets are also available there. For the front passenger seat, the Isofix bracket and the airbag that can be switched off are subject to a surcharge.

Dimensions

The five-door model entered the compact class with an initial length of 4227 mm and width of 1751 mm. The wheelbase of 2660 mm is the same for all variants. With the facelift in spring 2007, the dimensions of the five-door model corresponded to those of the three-door model.

Three- and five-door (E81 and E87)

Visually, the window line on the three-door model is even flatter towards the rear than on the five-door model; the two doors have frameless window panes. The variable luggage compartment has a size of 330 to 1150 liters and the 60:40 split foldable rear seat back is standard. The three-door is designed as a four-seater ex works, but can also be ordered as a five-seater at no extra charge.

In May 2007 there was a "Limited Sport Edition" limited to 2000 copies for the introduction of the three-door model. This was characterized by the individual paint "carbon black metallic", M-package with 18-inch wheels "Radialspeiche 216" in WTCC design and a start button with a limited edition frame.

Coupé (E82)

At the 2007 International Motor Show, BMW added a Coupé (E82) to the 1 Series. Sales started on November 24, 2007.

The vehicle has a long bonnet, slim passenger cabin and short rear. At the front, however, the design features of the 1 series have been retained except for minor modifications in order to guarantee the visual homogeneity of the model series.

The top model is the 135i, which is equipped with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder twin-turbo gasoline engine with an output of 225 kW (306 hp). This model is also equipped with a modified M-Sport package as standard. It can be recognized, among other things, by the Gurney Flap on the trunk lid, the painted brake calipers with BMW lettering and the missing fog lights, which are replaced by an oil cooler on the passenger side. Since spring 2010 the engine of the 135i has been equipped with a twin-scroll turbocharger (a single turbo with two exhaust gas inflow openings). BMW calls this technology "TwinPower Turbo". Among the diesel engines, the 123d (150 kW / 204 PS) is the first four-cylinder diesel engine with variable twin-turbo technology (see register charging ) and a third-generation common rail system (injection pressure 2000 bar).

In autumn 2009 the engine range of the coupe was expanded to include the 118d and 120i. 118d and 123d enable consumption between 4.5 and 5.2 liters.

The 1 Series Coupé received the red dot award: product design 2008 . The jury described the shape of the model as "agile, sporty and compact" .

A facelift followed in March 2011.

Based on the 1 Series Coupe, the Concept ActiveE was presented as an electric version in January 2010 . The road vehicle with the technology of the BMW i3 was only available for selected rental car fleets from 2011 to 2014. The vehicles declared as prototypes were scrapped in 2014 and the batteries were used to store electricity.

The successor to the 1 Series Coupé is the 2 Series Coupé introduced in 2013 with the internal model name BMW F22 .

Cabriolet (E88)

The official world premiere of the 1-series convertible took place at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2008. The official start of sales in Germany was on April 5, 2008. In contrast to the larger 3-series convertible, the 1-series convertible has a standard electrically operated fabric top with a heated glass rear window, which opens up to a speed of 40 kilometers per hour within 22 seconds and can be closed and is manufactured by Karmann . The trunk holds between 305 liters with the top down and 260 liters with the top down. The standard and additional equipment is based on the offer for the 1 Series Coupé. As a special feature, BMW offers leather upholstery with special pigmentation at an additional cost, which reduces the heating of the seats by up to 20 degrees Celsius compared to normal leather upholstery. The engine options of the four-cylinder engines are the 118i, 120i, 118d, 120d and 123d (from model year 2009), while the six-cylinder engines are the 125i and 135i (bi-turbo as in the coupé; from September 2009 turbo with twin scroll).

Like the 1 Series Coupé, the convertible also received a facelift in March 2011.

M Coupé (E82)

In contrast to the M vehicles of the 3 , 5 and 6 series ( M3 , M5 , M6 ), a different nomenclature was used for the 1 series with regard to the historic M1 . It was finally decided to put the “M” at the back, similar to the M versions of the X series.

The vehicle, which was only available as a coupé, is therefore called the 1er M Coupé . The first models were delivered in May 2011, with production ended in summer 2012. A total of 6331 pieces were produced. The last 4 vehicles were built in individual colors 1 × Java green 1 × Atacama yellow and 2 × Monte Carlo blue.

As in the X5 M and X6 M models, the 1 Series M Coupé is powered by a supercharged engine. The in -line six-cylinder petrol engine known as BMW M TwinPower Turbo has a displacement of 2979 cm³ and develops an output of 250 kW (340 hp) at 5900 rpm and a torque of 450 Nm between 1500 and 4500 rpm, which is increased to 500 Nm through the overboost function can be increased. The 1495 kg vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.9 seconds and from 0 to 200 km / h in 17.3 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km / h.

In addition to the engine, the M Coupé has other features to set itself apart from the regular 1-series models: These include a lightweight sports suspension, a mechanical differential lock (variable locking value up to 100 percent), a compound brake system and 19 "alloy wheels with mixed tires. The chassis has a track widening of 60 mm on the rear axle and 40 mm on the front axle, which also requires a corresponding fender widening. Additional changes to the body result, among other things, from the modified rear apron with spoiler, as well as the modified front with ventilation openings for the additional cooling system. In the interior, the car has leather upholstery and Alcantara interior strips, each with contrasting stitching.

Engines

At the start of production, three petrol and two diesel engines with four cylinders were offered (116i with 1.6 liters; 118i, 120i, 118d and 120d with 2.0 liters displacement). Both the diesel and gasoline engines are in-line engines with four-valve technology. One year after the start of production, the 130i was presented, an in-line six-cylinder with a displacement of 3.0 liters. With the facelift in March 2007, all engines were revised and all models received the BMW EfficientDynamics measures (except for the 116i, which was converted to Efficient Dynamics in September 2007). With the appearance of the coupé and the convertible, three new engines were introduced. The 125i and 135i were used exclusively in the coupé and convertible variants, while the 130i was reserved for the three- and five-door models. The 125i, 130i and 135i are six-cylinder in-line engines with a displacement of 3.0 liters.

The common rail diesel engines are equipped with two balancer shafts to ensure smooth running . The 123d with 150 kW (204 PS) was the most powerful four-cylinder diesel engine to date with a two-liter displacement. In contrast to the other BMW models, it had two-stage regulated turbocharging to provide high torque in all speed ranges with good responsiveness. Two different sized turbochargers are used, a small one that responds early and a large one for maximum filling. In contrast to the VTG turbocharger, regulation takes place via a wastegate, a compressor bypass and a control flap in the exhaust gas flow.

The engine has also received multiple awards at the Engine of the Year Awards . In 2008 as Best New Engine and in 2010 and 2011 first place in the 1.8-liter to 2-liter class .

With the arrival of BMW EfficientDynamics in March 2007, some gasoline engines were converted to direct injection (High Precision Injection) and all diesel models were equipped with a particle filter as standard .

In September 2007 the 116i (90 kW, 122 PS) was converted to direct petrol injection. Until then, this version had a significantly higher fuel consumption than the more powerful models due to the older technology. With the exception of the 116d, all models achieved the Euro 5 emissions standard from April 2009 (116d from September 2010 with Euro 5). For this purpose, the 116i received a new engine with a displacement of two liters with identical engine output. The consumption of the models with gasoline engines rose slightly as a result. With EfficientDynamics, the three-door version of the new 118d achieved fuel consumption of 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers and CO 2 emissions of 119 grams per kilometer, thus undercutting the EU CO 2 target of 2012 by one gram per kilometer. The 116d, available from March 2009, set a new record in BMW history with consumption of 4.4 liters per 100 kilometers and CO 2 emissions of 118 grams. From model year 2010, the 130i also reached Euro 5. The 195 kW variant was replaced by the 190 kW variant.

A dual clutch transmission was available for the 135i from March 2010.
