The BMW 315/1 was a small roadster that BMW built in Eisenach from 1934 to 1936 as a sports model of the 315 .

history

The 315/1 sports car was presented in March 1934 . and sold from summer 1934. It cost 5,200 RM

In 1936 the 315/1 was discontinued after 230 units without a successor. The sports car was listed next to the BMW 319/1 in “Car Price List No. 23” of June 1936, but was no longer on offer in the following price list from September 1936.

technology

The technology largely corresponded to that of the normal 315.

The engine with a displacement of 1490 cm³ (bore 58 mm, stroke 94 mm) was a water-cooled in-line six-cylinder with a side camshaft driven by a duplex chain and valve control via bumpers and rocker arms . But he had three Solex - flat flow gasifier 26 BFRV instead of two BFLV of 315/1. In addition, the engine had a higher compression ratio (1: 6.8 instead of 1: 5.6), which increased output by 6 hp to 40 hp (29 kW) at 4200 −1 . The car had a single- disk dry clutch, Hurth four-speed gearbox with synchronized third and fourth gear and center shift lever, and a cardan shaft to drive the rear wheels.

The roadster was flatter and 10 centimeters shorter than the sedan and convertible. The two-seater body with deep cut doors without side windows was placed on a tubular frame with cross members. As a rain protection, the car had a fabric roof as standard, which was folded back and covered by a tarpaulin . A removable coupe roof was supplied as an accessory on request. Like the 315, the 315/1 had rack and pinion steering, front wheels suspended from wishbones and an overhead transverse leaf spring, a rigid axle at the rear, semi-elliptical springs and mechanically or cable operated drum brakes on all four wheels. The wheels with a size of 3.25 D × 16 and the tires with a size of 5.25–16 also corresponded to the basic 315 model.

The fuel tank with a capacity of 50 liters was installed as standard in the engine compartment in front of the bulkhead , but was occasionally replaced or supplemented by a tank in the rear.

With a top speed of around 120 km / h, the BMW 315/1 was around 20 km / h faster than the approximately 80 kg heavier BMW 315. The fuel consumption is said to have been around 11.5 liters for 100 kilometers.

Motorsport

In the 1934 International Alpine Tour over 2867 kilometers, 96 of the 127 cars that had started arrived at their destination in Munich, including five BMW 315/1s from the works team that had received no penalty points and won the International Alpine Cup. At the Feldberg hill climb in 1935, two BMW 315/1 took first places in the sports car class up to 1.5 liters.

The racing driver Ralph Roese , who won the sports car class up to 1.5 liters a few times as a works driver at the Eifel race on the Nürburgring, had a 315/1 converted into a 315/1 Spezial. This car weighed just 380 kilograms ready to race and the engine output is said to have been increased to 136 hp.
