Mario Alborghetti (born October 23, 1928 in Milan , Italy , † April 11, 1955 in Pau , France ) was an Italian racing driver .

Mario Alborghetti was one of many wealthy young drivers at the time who did not earn their participation in car races through their talent, but bought a place in the starting field. In 1955 he bought a Maserati 4CLT / 48 from the former Formula 1 team Scuderia Milano . Alborghetti hired the mechanics Egidio Arzani and Gianpaolo Volpini to improve his car. Together they created the so-called “Arzani-Volpini Special”, which was very similar to the Ferrari 533 models of the time . At the Gran Premio del Valentino in Turin, which is not part of the drivers' world championship , Alborghetti had his first report about a race, but the car could not be completed in time for the start.

Two weeks later he started at the Grand Prix de Pau on the Circuit de Pau , but the Maserati already proved to be a failure during practice. Almost 20 seconds behind pole setter Alberto Ascari in the Lancia D50 , Alborghetti started from the back row. In the race, the completely inferior Italian had to make three pit stops in the first laps. In the 19th lap he was lapped by Jacques Pollet . While trying to make way for the Gordini driver, Alborghetti got off the track and collided almost unchecked in the La Gare curve with the straw bales deposited there for safety. Alborghetti's helmet was torn off his head on impact. The 26-year-old Italian was killed immediately. Eleven spectators were also injured in the accident, two of them seriously.

It is assumed that the possible cause of this accident was that Alborghetti confused the brake and accelerator pedals.
