The BMW 4 Series (internal designation: F32 - Coupé , F33 - Cabriolet , F36 - Hatchback Sedan / Gran Coupé ) is a mid-range vehicle from the manufacturer BMW that went on sale in October 2013.

The 4 - Series Coupé-Cabriolet is available as 420i, 428i, 430i, 430i xDrive, 435i, 435i xDrive, 440i and 440i xDrive with gasoline engines and as 420d, 430d and 435d xDrive with a diesel engine.

Model history

The 4 Series replaced the Coupé and Cabriolet of the 3 Series and is therefore the successor to the BMW E92 and E93 .

A near-series concept vehicle was shown for the first time in Munich in the Kesselhaus in Munich at the beginning of December 2012 in front of 200 invited guests and presented to the public again on January 14, 2013 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The world premiere of the series model of the coupé took place officially at the IAA 2013, the market launch took place on October 5, 2013.

The convertible version (F33) with a retractable roof, the world premiere of which was formally held at the 2013 LA Auto Show and the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show , was launched on March 8, 2014.

The concept vehicle for the coupé variant of the M4 was presented at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2013, the production vehicle (F82) officially at the NAIAS 2014 and has been available since summer 2014. The four-door BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé (F36) followed with a formal public premiere at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show . For the M4 Cabriolet (F83), the manufacturer selected the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) as the premiere exhibition .

In 2017, the series received a facelift , which was shown for the first time at a major vehicle fair at the Geneva Motor Show.

Production sites

The 4 Series Coupé (F32) is manufactured in Munich , the F33 (Cabriolet) series exclusively in Regensburg and the F36 (hatchback sedan) in Dingolfing .

technology

Engines

At the start of series production there were two gasoline engines in the 428i with a maximum output of 180 kW (245 PS) and in the 435i with a maximum output of 225 kW (306 PS) as well as a diesel engine in the 420d with a maximum output of 135 kW (184 PS).

From November 2013, the engine range was expanded to include the 420i with 135 kW (184 PS) maximum output and two diesel engines in the 430d with 190 kW (258 PS) and the 435d with 230 kW (313 PS) maximum output. These engines are also used in the models of the BMW F30 .

Another revision of the engine range was announced in January 2016. The new modular motors with the identifier B found their way into the following models:

  • 420i: B48B20, still 135 kW (184 PS) maximum output
  • 430i: B48B20, replaces the 428i and now has a maximum output of 185 kW (252 PS)
  • 440i: B58B30, replaces the 435i and now has a maximum output of 240 kW (326 PS)
  • 425d: B47D20, now delivers a maximum of 165 kW (224 PS)

As a result of the engine change, the maximum torque remained the same with the exception of the 440i (+50 Nm) in contrast to the respective predecessor, but the power delivery changed, which can be recognized by a change in the start and end speed of the maximum torque.

body

The F33 has a three-part folding top made of metal with a glass rear window. After opening, it is stored behind the passengers in the luggage compartment and reduces the remaining volume from 370 liters to 220 liters. On the F36, the tailgate with built-in rear window is attached to the roof due to the design.

Motorsport

There is a GT4 variant of the BMW F82 and it is the model for the silhouette prototype vehicle BMW M4 DTM .
