The BMW 320 was a mid-range car with a six-cylinder in - line engine , which was built by BMW in the Eisenach branch from 1937–1938 as the successor to the 319 and 329 models . Its successor was the almost identical BMW 321 , which was manufactured by Awtowelo in Eisenach until 1941 and from 1945 to 1950 after the war .

The BMW 320 was released in July 1937. He had cc engine of the predecessor type, a six-cylinder with two carburetors and a displacement of 1911, the 45 hp (33 kW) at 3,750 min -1 gave, but in contrast to the larger BMW 326 only two Doors. After 640 copies, the engine known from the 326 model with a displacement of 1971 cc was installed, but only equipped with one carburetor. This engine also developed 45 hp (33 kW). The car reached 110 km / h.
The chassis corresponded to the 319/329; a transverse leaf spring at the front and two semi-elliptical longitudinal leaf springs at the rear. The brakes acting on all four wheels were now operated hydraulically. The wheelbase and vehicle length had grown significantly. There were only two models left, a sedan for RM 4,500 and a four-seater convertible for RM 5,250.
4,240 pieces were produced. In 1939 the 321 model replaced the 320.

In January 1939, the 320 was replaced by the revised BMW 321 . It received the unchanged 2.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine from its predecessor. The bodies were 110 mm wider. The front axle was now of the type 326. One change was that the doors that had previously been hinged at the front were now hinged at the rear. These suicide doors made it easier for drivers and passengers to get in and were modern in their day. On request, a sliding roof from Golde was offered for the sedan.
The sedan cost RM 4,800 (with sunroof RM 5,100) and the convertible RM 5,650.
3,637 copies were built in three years. Due to the war, production was stopped in 1941. From 1945 to 1950 the model was produced again in Eisenach, this time as the BMW 321/2 under the management of the Soviet stock corporation Awtowelo .
