The BMW M6 GT3 is a racing car built by BMW Motorsport according to the FIA GT3 regulations . The base vehicle is the BMW M6 (F13) . A modified version called the BMW M6 GTLM is used for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship .

development

GT3

The BMW M6 GT3 replaced the Z4 GT3, which had been in use since 2010, as a racing car for customer racing in the GT3 group . With the M6 as the base vehicle, BMW wanted to eliminate the main criticisms of the predecessor. The roadster BMW Z4 was smaller than the vehicles of the competitors and the short wheelbase made it difficult to drive. In addition, no engines with more than six cylinders were available for the production version of the Z4 , which was considered too small for racing.

In the absence of a smaller coupe with a V8 engine in the model range, BMW had to rely on the large and heavy M6 (F13) , which entailed extensive changes. The mass of the car was reduced from 1925 kg in series production to 1300 kg for racing use, the seating position was shifted backwards and centered and the gearbox was moved to the rear axle as a transaxle gearbox for better weight distribution. There are also extensive aerodynamic changes and other adjustments to racing operations.

GTLM

In the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the M6 GTLM also replaces the BMW Z4 GTE based on the Z4 E89 . The M6 GTLM-specific development program operated by BMW Team RLL, including tests at Daytona International Speedway and Sebring International Raceway , began in November 2015.

Vehicle concept

body

Self-supporting steel body with welded-in safety cell in accordance with FIA standards. The outer skin is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic to meet the guidelines for GT3 vehicles .

Compared to the M6 GT3, the M6 GTLM has one less air guide fin on the front bumper and also no spoiler lip on the tailgate.

engine

The racing engine of the BMW M6 GT3 is based on the 4.4-liter series engine with biturbo charging (BMW designation: M-TwinPower-Turbocharger), as in the BMW M6 Coupé. The oil supply and charge air cooling have been modified.

drive

The power is transmitted to the rear axle by a hydraulically operated 4-plate sintered clutch and a sequential transaxle gearbox. The 7 gears are changed with paddles on the steering wheel. The locking effect of the rear axle differential is adjustable.

Brakes

The M6 GT3 has 6-piston fixed caliper brakes on the front axle and 4-piston fixed caliper brakes on the rear axle.

bikes

The wheels of the M6 GT3 and the M6 GTLM differ due to the regulations. On the M6 GTLM, the tires on the front axle are slightly smaller than on the rear axle.

electronics

Various electronic driving aids are built into the M6 GT3, such as a racing anti-lock braking system and a traction control system (ASC) that are not available in the M6 GTLM . In contrast to its predecessor, the M6 GT3 has no electronic stability program (DSC). In the cockpit there is a multifunction steering wheel and a color display with an optional logger function.

Racing use

The BMW M6 GT3 and the BMW M6 GTLM were used in various racing series around the world from January 2016. Already in the first year, victories with the M6 GT3 were celebrated in the VLN endurance championship Nürburgring , the 24-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps and in North America in races in the GTD class in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship; at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring , however, you had to admit defeat to the competition from Mercedes .

The first victory in the GTLM class with the BMW M6 GTLM was achieved in July 2017 at Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen at Watkins Glen International by Alexander Sims and Bill Auberlen .

On November 18, 2018, Augusto Farfus won the FIA GT World Cup at the Guia Circuit in Macau in a BMW M6 GT3 from Schnitzer Motorsport .

Art Car

The Chinese artist Cao Fei designed a carbon black M6 GT3 as a BMW Art Car . The non-reflective color enables interaction with digital technology (downloadable app , app store under “BMW Art Car # 18”).
