Watkins Glen 6 hour race
The 6-hour race of Watkins Glen (current name: Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen ) is a sports car race that has been held since 1948. The race takes place on the course of Watkins Glen , New York instead and is currently in the calendar of United SportsCar Championship .
history
Today's 6-hour race goes back to the Watkins Glen Grand Prix , which was held in 1948 on a road circuit around Watkins Glen by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). While the first race was held over 50 miles, in the second year it was already twice as long. After twelve spectators were injured and one killed in an accident in the 1952 race, the layout of the course changed to other roads in the region. But this should only be a temporary measure, since 1956 the race has been on a permanent circuit.
As part of the United States Road Racing Championship, which was also held by the SCCA, the event gradually changed from 1963 to a long-distance race . After a 300km race was held in the first year under the new series roof, the spectators could see a 200 mile race from 1964 to 1968. Parallel to the Grand Prix, a 6-hour race was held for the first time in 1968 as part of the World Sports Car Championship . Jackie Ickx and Lucien Bianchi in a Ford GT 40 won this race. The world championship stayed in Watkins Glen up to and including 1981 before the racetrack operator had to file for bankruptcy.
The race was suspended for two years before the IMSA GT Championship hosted another endurance race on the course in 1984. The IMSA established the 3-hour / 500 km format in Watkins Glen, and for a number of years two races were held per year, the second under the title New York 500 . It was not until 1996 that the 6-hour race returned to the annual calendar of race track operators as part of the IMSA GT Championship, and in 1998 the organizer switched to the newly established United States Road Racing Championship. Since this championship was discontinued after a year and a half, it was not until 2000 that a constant partner could be found again to host. The Grand-Am adds the 6-hour race as part of his Rolex Sports Car Series in its calendar, and there remained the again popular expectant event up to and including the year 2013. After the unification of the Grand Am with the American Le Mans Series is the race was held as part of the United SportsCar Championship from 2014 .
