1977 Watkins Glen 6 hour race
The 1977 Watkins Glen 6-Hours , also 6-Hours Trans-Am and The Can-Am for the SCCA Citicorp Can-Am Challenge, The Glen, Toyota Paces The Races, Watkins Glen Grand Prix Circuit , took place on September 9th. July in Watkins Glen and was the ninth round of the sports car world championship of this year.
The race
Since 1948 , sports car races have been held on racetracks near the small town of Watkins Glen in Schuyler County in the US state of New York . The 1948 race lasted 80 kilometers and ended with Frank Griswold winning in an Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B . Since 1968 (overall winner Jacky Ickx and Lucien Bianchi in a Ford GT40 ) the race has been part of the sports car world championship .
In 1977 the race had a strong line-up of drivers. The participants included the Formula 1 race winners Jacky Ickx, Jochen Mass and Ronnie Peterson . Formula 1 drivers George Follmer , Brett Lunger , Hans-Joachim Stuck and David Hobbs and two-time Indy 500 winner Johnny Rutherford . There were also well-known sports car drivers such as Peter Gregg , Hurley Haywood , Dick Barbour and Claude Ballot-Léna .
The 1977 race was dominated by Porsche . The first twelve places in the overall classification were taken by Porsche models. Winners were Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass in work - Porsche 935 that the target had a lead of three laps of the Porsche 935 of George Follmer and Brett Lunger.
