Mosport 6-hour race 1977
The 1977 Mosport 6 Hour Race , also known as Molson Diamond Can-Am Trans-Am Weekend (Molson Diamond 6 Hour Trans-Am and World Manufacturers Championship), Mosport Park , was held at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on August 28 and was the twelfth round of the sports car world championship this year.
The race
The Mosport 6 Hours was a debut event in many ways. It was the first and only overall victory of a Canadian in the World Sports Car Championship . Ludwig Heimrath Sr. came to Canada as an emigrant in 1956 , worked for VW Canada, took on Canadian citizenship and became a successful sports car driver . His teammate in the Porsche 934/5 was the American Paul Miller . A second Canadian contested his first and last world championship race in Mosport. Gilles Villeneuve , the father of the future Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve and brother of Jacques Villeneuve senior , drove a BMW 320i and finished second overall with partner Eddie Cheever .
Originally, Peter Gregg and Bob Wollek had won the race in the Porsche 934/4 with a three-lap advantage. Hours after the race, the car was disqualified because of an illegal suspension.
