Sportscar Grand Prix (Mosport)

Winner in 2011

The Sportscar Grand Prix is a sports car race at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville , Canada . The race is also known as the Grand Prix of Mosport . The race is currently being held by the United SportsCar Championship .

history

The race was launched by the IMSA GT series in 1975 and was added to the calendar of the World Sportscar Championship just a year later . There it was initially held as a 320 km sprint, a year later as a 6-hour race. After a two-year hiatus, the event returned and was partly on the calendar of the World Championship and partly on the racing calendar of the North American IMSA Championship. The race distance was now always 6 hours or 1000 km. In 1985 the race suffered a severe blow when Manfred Winkelhock got off the track in the second corner with his Porsche 962C from Kremer Racing and crashed into a concrete wall. He died in the hospital a day later. The sports car world championship did not come back to this route.

The IMSA GT Championship took over the race from 1989, with only the GT cars competing. The race distance was initially 500 km, later 300 km and finally two hours. After no races were held in 1993 and 1994, not only the IMSA GT but also the prototypes came back to Ontario in 1995 . Dyson Racing won the race that year and should add four more overall wins and one class win over the next few years.

After the end of the IMSA GT, the American Le Mans Series took over the race in 1999 and downgraded it to the regular ALMS distance of 2:45 hours. The year also marked the beginning of the popular name Grand Prix of Mosport, which was retained until 2012 using various sponsor names. In addition, as on so many ALMS circuits, the dominance of Audi began , with seven victories in nine years. Most recently it was Muscle Milk Pickett Racing , which brought in four victories in a row from 2010 to 2013. From the 2014 season, the race was taken over by the United SportsCar Championship .
