Olivier Beretta (born November 23, 1969 in Monte Carlo ) is a Monegasque automobile racing driver .

Career

Olivier Beretta began his career like many well-known racing drivers in karting in 1983. In 1989 he switched to the French Formula 3 championship and a year later drove the European championship in this class. In a Dallara Alfa Romeo he finished third in the most important race of the year in Monaco and at the end of the year achieved his first victory in the race in Pau, which brought him third place in the overall standings.

A broken forearm at the Formula 3 race in Monaco in 1991 (Beretta drove in this formula for another year) hindered him for the whole year. Countable successes were therefore largely absent. Even switching to national championships in England and France could not change that.

However, in 1992 Beretta switched to Formula 3000 . He signed a contract with Nelson Piquet's new team, but this year did not bring the results he had hoped for. Beretta was particularly prone to individual mistakes under pressure and had to write off the season as a year of learning. It wasn't until the move to Forti Corse in 1993 that the turning point was brought about. The very first race in Donington ended with a win after pole position in practice. It was supposed to remain the only podium of the year, but at least it was enough to finish sixth in the championship thanks to constant rides in the points.

With a lot of sponsorship money, Beretta entered Formula 1 in 1994. Gérard Larrousse's constantly underfunded team signed him as a partner of Érik Comas . With the Larrousse LH94 Ford-Cosworth, however, he was unable to match his teammate's performance. At the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim he came closest to the points. Seventh place should remain his best result in this racing series. After the Hungarian Grand Prix he ran out of sponsorship money and his Grand Prix career ended after just nine races without any countable success.

It was only when Beretta switched to sports cars that he achieved success in motorsport, as these cars corresponded to his style and stamina. For the Team ORECA he won in 1998 the championship in the GT2 class of the FIA GT Championship and two class victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1999 and 2000. In the duo with Karl Wendlinger on the Chrysler Viper GTS-R he was in the GTS class 1999 and 2000 American Le Mans Series champion . Since 2004 Beretta Corvette works driver and piloted the C5-R , or C6.R . For Corvette Racing , the official name of the works team, he won the GTS or GT1 class three times at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, twice at the 12 Hours of Sebring , three times at the Petit Le Mans and two more times the overall classification in this class in the American Le Mans Series.
