Sebring 12 hour race 2005
The 53rd Sebring 12 Hours of Sebring , also known as the 53rd Annual Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, Sebring International Raceway , took place on March 19, 2005 at the Sebring International Raceway and was the first race of the 2005 ALMS season .
Before the race
The race in Sebring was again the opening event of the new season. The defending champions of the American Le Mans Series were Marco Werner and JJ Lehto .
The race
The most interesting new racing car in Sebring for years was the Maserati MC12 GT1 in 2005 . The development of the MC12 GT1 began after the takeover of Maserati by Ferrari . Ferrari commissioned Maserati to design a racing car that would be eligible to compete in the FIA GT championship . In contrast to most of the other racing cars in the FIA GT championship, which are usually further developments of road sports cars, the MC12 was specially designed for use in motorsport. The 50 built vehicles of the street version should only be used for homologation . Due to the fact that the street-legal Maserati MC12 was already a very radical concept, Maserati had more technical freedom than its competitors for its racing vehicle, originally called Maserati Corse Competizione . As head test driver, Andrea Bertolini carried out many test drives with the Maserati MC12 GT1. Some test drives were also completed by Michael Schumacher .
With 38 starters on race day, this was the smallest starting field in the 2000s to date. The race was again dominated by the Audi R8 . This time JJ Lehto , Marco Werner and Tom Kristensen won the Champion R8. The Maserati, driven by Bertolini, Fabio Babini and Fabrizio De Simone , crossed the finish line in eighth place overall. This meant fourth place in the GT1 class.
