Sebring 12 hour race in 1963
The twelfth 12-hour race of Sebring , also 12 Hours of Sebring, Sebring , took place on March 23, 1963 at the Sebring International Raceway and was the third round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
The endurance race in Sebring was the third championship run in 1963 . The season started in February with the 3-hour race in Daytona , won by Pedro Rodríguez in a Ferrari 250 GTO of the North American Racing Team . At the following 3-hour race at Sebring won Hans Herrmann on a plant - Fiat Abarth 1000 .
The Ferrari teams, including the works team from Maranello and the North American Racing from Luigi Chinetti, were clear favorites for overall victory . The hopes of American viewers rested on Carroll Shelby's car . But the powerful Cobras were not stable enough. The top driver there was Phil Hill , who left Ferrari at the end of 1962.
Although the Cobras were able to lead the race at the beginning, after 12 hours there was a total triumph for the Ferraris. The two factory 250Ps won ahead of the NART- 330TRI and three GTOs. The best non-Ferrari was the Jaguar E-Type Lightweight by Ed Leslie and Frank Morrill .
