The Ferrari 330TRI was a racing car that the Scuderia Ferrari engineers developed for sports car racing in 1962.

Background and technology

The 330TRI was the last Testa Rossa Ferrari . The construction of the racing car was a look back at Ferrari racing car construction in the 1950s. With the Ferrari Dino 246SP , the concept of the mid-engine had found its way into Maranello. But the 330TRI had a front engine again . The chassis was taken over from a 250TRI . Chassis number 0780 became 0808.

The car had a 4-liter engine and a Spider body that was manufactured by Fantuzzi . The engine block was taken from the Ferrari 400 Superamerica and adapted for racing. The cylinder heads, pistons, the valve drive and the dry sump lubrication were taken from the 250 Testa Rossa. The power was given as 390 hp. The engine was installed at a slight angle to the left, which is why the tubular frame had to be extended to a wheelbase of 2420 mm. The rear brake discs were arranged directly on the gearbox and differential.

Racing history

The Ferrari factory team used the 330TRI only once; at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1962 . The race ended with a clear victory for the 330TRI, driven by Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien . Gendebien announced his retirement from active racing after the race and his fourth overall Le Mans victory. After Le Mans victory of the car to which was North American Racing Team from Luigi Chinetti sold. Pedro Rodríguez finished second in the 1962 Canadian Grand Prix . This was also achieved by Masten Gregory in the Preliminary Governor's Trophy . At the end of the year, Rodríguez won the 400 km race in Bridgehampton , a run for the 1962 World Sports Car Championship .

The last two races the car had in 1963 in the sports car world championship . At the 12-hour race at Sebring , Pedro Rodríguez and Graham Hill finished third overall; Two laps behind the victorious factory Ferrari 250P of John Surtees and Ludovico Scarfiotti . At the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Rodríguez and Roger Penske retired after an accident.
