The Ferrari 250 Monza was a racing car developed by Ferrari in 1954 .

Development history and technology

The Ferrari 250 Monza was not an independent and completely newly developed racing car model. Basically, this vehicle was an assembly consisting of the chassis of the 750 Monza and from the 250MM acquired from Aurelio Lampredi advanced Colombo -3-liter V12 engine made, the now 240 hp.

The 250 Monza contradicts the developments at Scuderia Ferrari in sports car racing in 1954. With the use of the 500 Mondial and the 750 Monza, the drive was just being converted to 4-cylinder in- line engines . It is largely unclear why Ferrari also built this model for racing. Some sources rate the development as an attempt to have an alternative for fast racetracks like the Monza circuit . However, the wagon type was not used enough for this project approach.

The four chassis, 0420M, 0442M, 0432M and 0466M were initially given Spider bodies from Pininfarina . After the chassis 0442M was badly damaged in an accident in 1957, Scaglietti built a new body.

Racing history

The 250 Monza was first used at the Giro di Sicilia in 1954 . At the wheel is changed Gerino Gerini and Luciano Donazzolo from which finished the race in third overall. Two months later, Maurice Trintignant and Luigi Piotti achieved their first overall victory at the Hyères 12-hour race .

Gerini celebrated further successes at the Trofeo Sardo and Piotti at the 1954 Reggio Calabria sports car race .
