Luigi Piotti (born October 27, 1913 in Milan , † April 9, 1971 in Godiasco ) was an Italian racing driver .

Career

The Ferrari 250 Monza with the Luigi Piotti together with Maurice Trintignant , the 12-hour race in Hyeres 1,954 won

Luigi Piotti, an Italian businessman who raced for pleasure, had some success in sports car racing early in his career. In 1952 he celebrated a class win at the Tour de Sicilly with a privately registered OSCA and surprisingly came third at the Targa Florio in 1954 . In the same year he won the rarely driven Hyères 12-hour race in a works Ferrari together with Maurice Trintignant .

In 1956 he made his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship . In 1955 he had finished seventh at the Gran Premio di Siracusa and his strong performance earned him a Maserati factory car for the Argentine Grand Prix . In the race, to the astonishment of the professional world, the Italian fought his way up to the top group before colliding in his Maserati 250F with the Ferrari 555 Supersqualo from Peter Collins . At the Italian Grand Prix , he caused a stir again when he unceremoniously pushed the Stirling Moss Maserati, which had broken down without petrol, into the pits. Moss won the race, Piotti finished sixth, three laps behind, and narrowly missed a championship point.

He drove his Maserati regularly until 1958 in monoposto races. At the end of the season he retired from racing and dedicated himself to his business. Piotti celebrated successes in sports car racing , where he achieved five overall victories in endurance races .
