The Gran Premio di Siracusa (German: Grand Prix of Syracuse ) was an automobile sport event that was held a total of 13 times from 1951 to 1967. The races took place in the Sicilian city of Syracuse . They were advertised for Formula 1 cars, but did not count towards the World Automobile Championship .
background
The venue was the Circuito di Siracusa , a non-permanent race track in the city of Syracuse, which is almost directly on the Mediterranean coast. In view of the good climatic conditions on the southern Italian island, the Syracuse Grand Prix was, with few exceptions, one of the first European Formula 1 races of the respective season.
The last edition of the Syracuse Grand Prix had two winners. According to the official time measurement, the Ferrari works drivers Ludovico Scarfiotti and Mike Parkes reached the finish at the same time after 1: 40.58.4 hours in 1967. Both were counted as winners; second place was not awarded.
From 1968 the Grand Prix of Syracuse was no longer held; since then there have been no more Formula 1 races in Sicily. The highest class monoposto races were races of the Formula 2 European Championship until 1984 , which were held under the name Gran Premio del Mediterraneo on the Autodromo di Pergusa in a suburb of the island's interior town of Enna . From 1985 to 1998 races of the International Formula 3000 Championship were held there.
