Emmanuel "Toulo" de Graffenried (born May 18, 1914 in Paris , † January 22, 2007 in Lonay ) was a Swiss automobile racing driver .
Career
Baron de Graffenried - that's what he liked to call himself even though the use of noble titles is forbidden in Switzerland - remained associated with Maserati cars for almost his entire career . From 1937 to 1939 it drove almost exclusively in the lower-displacement Voiturette class.
He had his best years after the Second World War . Together with his compatriot Christian Kautz , he founded a private racing stable, with Maseratis of course. His great successes include victory at the Grand Prix of Great Britain in 1949 , third place in Monaco in 1948 and several other podiums.
In the early years of the Formula 1 World Championship, as an Alfa Romeo importer in Lausanne, he was occasionally allowed to drive the factory Alfa Romeos, but mostly he raced on Maserati. In 22 starts between 1950 and 1956, he made it into the points four times, his best place was a fourth in Belgium in 1953.
In 1957 de Graffenried retired from active racing, but remained connected to Formula 1. In 1998, the 84-year-old did a lap in a racing car at Silverstone 's 50th anniversary .
