The 1952 Italian Grand Prix took place on September 7th at the Monza circuit and was the last of eight races for the 1952 World Cup .

background

Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi - both in Ferrari 500 - exit the Parabolica

35 entries were submitted for the race. In particular, the numerous Italian teams that appeared increased the number of reports considerably. Ferrari entered with five mentions; In addition to the regular drivers Ascari , Farina and Taruffi , Villoresi and André Simon also drove a works car. The Ecurie Espadon registered two private Ferraris for Fischer and Hans Stuck , as did Rosier , Whitehead and de Tornaco . In the last race of the season, the official Maserati works team was also at the start for the first time with three cars for González , Bonetto and Rol . The factory-supported South American Escuderia Bandeirantes registered three Maserati of the current A6GCM type , while Enrico Platé sent two older models into the race. With OSCA and Cisitalia , two other Italian teams were registered. Gordini was represented in the usual line-up Behra , Trintignant and Manzon , while at Connaught Stirling Moss replaced Ken Downing .

training

Only the 24 fastest of the 35 registered vehicles were allowed to start. Ascari secured pole position with 2: 05.7 minutes ahead of his teammates Villoresi and Farina. At Maserati, only González was able to convince to some extent and achieved a place in the second row, while the other two works cars started clearly behind the field. The entire HWM team could not qualify and had to pack up on Saturday evening. The premiere of the Cisitalia with Piero Dusio was canceled because the Italian's engine burst during training and no replacement was available. OSCA, on the other hand, offered an appealing performance with Elie Bayol at the helm, who qualified as tenth among 35 participants.

run

The best start was achieved by González, who took the lead from the second row and was able to extend this position until the middle of the race. For the first time this season, a non-Ferrari was ahead for a long time. Ascari was in second place and was unable to clear his teammate Villoresi. Villoresi always followed closely with Ascari and at times even managed to oust him. González's Maserati, however, had a smaller tank, which gave it weight advantages, although it had to refuel once. That happened on lap 36 and Ascari took the lead, González fell back to fourth place. On the 44th lap he was able to overtake Farina and on the 61st lap Villoresi had to make a short stop, which brought the Goncález back to second place. But Ascari was already more than a minute ahead, so he had no chance of winning his second Grand Prix. As the time measurement options did not allow a differentiation in hundredths of a second, the point for the fastest lap was shared between González and Ascari. Thus, Ascari was half a point missing in order to achieve the optimal number of points in all European world championship runs in which he competed. This record is still unbroken today.
