Élie Bayol (born February 28, 1914 in Marseille , † May 25, 1995 in La Ciotat , Bouches-du-Rhône ) was a French racing driver.

Career

The southern French rider belongs to the large group of drivers whose talent flashed again and again, but who never made a big breakthrough due to a lack of competitive material.

In the early 1950s, Bayol was active on DB Panhard in mountain and Formula 2 races in France. For the Formula 1 seasons of 1952 and 1953 , which were held according to Formula 2 rules, he acquired a private car from the OSCA brand . However, these Italian cars were neither fast nor reliable, so that he never crossed the finish line at any World Championship round. The highlight of this time was undoubtedly a victory in a race in Aix-les-Bains that was not part of the World Cup .

In the 1954 season he joined the inferior Gordini racing team, which used him sporadically in races. At the GP of Argentina he was able to achieve his only World Championship points with a fifth place. Like most drivers of this era, Bayol also tried endurance races and finished tenth in the Le Mans 24-hour race . In 1955 he suffered severe head injuries in a training accident at Le Mans.

In the 1956 season he achieved sixth place on Gordini together with André Pilette in Monaco, but back then there were no World Cup points. Frustrated by his inferior equipment, but also remembering his serious accident in 1955, he retired from active racing at the end of 1956. He died in 1995 at the age of 81.
