Mille Miglia 1953
The 20th Mille Miglia took place on April 25th and 26th, 1953 and was the second round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
After the introduction of the sports car world championship in 1953, the Mille Miglia, which had been driven since 1927, also belonged to this championship. This decision was not entirely undisputed, as the event as a road race was fundamentally different from the circuit races. However, this year another road race, the Carrera Panamericana , was also part of the championship.
In Italy, the Mille was one of the most important events for the masses in the early 1950s and had long since gone beyond the scope of pure motorsport. It was therefore an obligation for the Italian automobile companies to take part in the race. In addition, in the newly created Formula 1 World Championship in 1950, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari provided the winning vehicles of the three championships held up to 1953. In 1952 and 1953 the automobile championship for drivers was held with Formula 2 vehicles and Ferrari rose to become the dominant brand.
Manufacturers, teams and drivers
The Scuderia came to the Mille Miglia with a veritable armada of vehicles. With one exception, they were all coupes. Luigi Villoresi , the American Tom Cole and Gianni Marzotto drove the 340MM Vignale with a 3.5 liter V12 engine . The Marzotto car was the Scuderia's only convertible. Giuseppe Farina's 340MM had the 4.1 liter V12 engine from the Formula 1 Ferrari 340F1 . Gianni Marzotto's brother Paolo drove a 250MM with a Pininfarina body. The Marzotto brothers - the third, Umberto , was the co-pilot of Gino Bronzoni on a works - Lancia Aurelia - were very popular in Italy. All three only drove mountain and road races and were considered absolutely fearless. Gianni had already won the 1000 mile race for Ferrari in 1950 . The British Ferrari works driver Mike Hawthorn drove a 250MM Vignale and last year's winner Giovanni Bracco sat like Paolo Marzotto in a 250MM Pininfarina.
Alfa Romeo had withdrawn from monopostos after winning two Formula 1 drivers' championships at the end of 1951, but the Milan-based company was still active in sports cars. Three 6C30 were reported. However, Alfa Romeo did without the Disco-Volante bodies and equipped the 3-liter vehicles as coupés. For the 1000-mile race, the Argentine Formula 1 world champion from 1951, Juan Manuel Fangio , returned to his former world championship team. The second 6C30 was driven by the Italian Consalvo Sanesi , an Alfa Romeo works driver since the 1940s. The German racing driver Karl Kling was hired for the third vehicle, while his compatriot Hans Klenk was a co-driver.
The Scuderia Lancia brought the D20 -Rennsportwagen to Brescia. The 3-liter V8 cars were driven by Felice Bonetto , Piero Taruffi and Mille Miglia record winner Clemente Biondetti . Biondetti had already won the race in 1938, 1947, 1948 and 1949. The factory Aurelias were withdrawn at short notice by the Lancia officials after a dispute with the organizer. The conflict over the homologation of the Alfa Romeo 1900TI , which, from Lancia's point of view, did not come about in accordance with the rules , had intensified . Finally, the Aurelias went to the start.
For Maserati adequate racing car was missing. In addition to a few private cars, only the A6GCS Fantuzzi from Sergio Mantovani and Luigi Musso was supported by the factory.
Fiat and its first 8-cylinder sports car, the 8V, attracted a lot of attention . The factory car was driven by the pre-war veteran Franco Cortese and one of the private cars by the Leto di Priolo brothers.
The British factory teams of Jaguar and Aston Martin competed against this Italian superiority . The Aston Martin racing team had a particularly tiring journey. The English had already been at the start of the first world championship run, the 12 Hours of Sebring , at the beginning of March and first had to bring racing cars and spare parts back to Europe from the USA. The drivers therefore had to train with replacement cars. The DB3s were driven by Reg Parnell , whose co-driver was British motorsport photographer Louis Klemantaski , Peter Collins , George Abecassis and Tommy Wisdom . Jaguar entrusted its factory C-Types to Stirling Moss , Tony Rolt and Leslie Johnson . A German factory team also found their way to Northern Italy. Porsche prepared four 356s for the race in Untertürkheim . In addition to the young Hans Herrmann and Helmut Polensky , the two aristocrats Wittigo von Einsiedel and Paul Alfons von Metternich-Winneburg drove the works Porsche 356 1500 Super .
In addition to the works cars, there was an abundance of professionally used private cars in a wide variety of classes. In the touring car class up to 1.3 liters, Gino Munaron drove a Peugeot 203 , Paul Frère a Chrysler Saratoga , John Fitch a Nash-Healey and Jacques Swaters’s Belgian Ecurie Francorchamps registered a Ferrari 225S Vignale for him . In the small touring car classes, there was an abundance of Renault 4CVs and Fiat 1100s , some of which had factory support. The later founder of Alpine , Jean Rédélé , drove a works 4CV and the Italian Nello Pagani entered the race in one of the 1100 Fiats.
The film director Roberto Rossellini , who contested the race with a private Ferrari 250MM Vignale, and the third Aga Khan , whose Alfa Romeo 1900C52 was driven by Goffredo Zehender , provided jet-set glamor . At the start also was Mario Tadini , who in the 1920s Enzo Ferrari had supported financially in the creation of the Scuderia.
The course of the race
576 vehicles were registered, 487 started the race. With the one-minute start interval between the deflated vehicles, there was a festival atmosphere in Brescia all night. The first vehicle entered the race at 9 p.m. on Saturday evening. When John Fitch started his Nash-Healey, it was already 5:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, and the sun rose over Brescia as Tony Rolt rolled over the launch pad in his Jaguar. When the last vehicles, the factory Ferrari, made their way to Verona , it began to rain slightly. At this point the first racing cars had already arrived at the turning point in Rome .
As always, the race was broadcast live on the radio and the audience always had to wait a long time until the last fast cars came through the respective stage destinations. Consalvo Sanesi set the fastest time in his Alfa Romeo as far as Verona, and that in the meanwhile pouring rain. Piero Taruffi in the Lancia and his team mate Giuseppe Farina were just behind him. There were several accidents on the slippery road. Stirling Moss and Leslie Johnson dropped out due to technical defects. Sanesi was still in charge in Ravenna . Farina was now second, ahead of Karl Kling, a 2.3-liter Gordini, as well as Fangio and Bracco.
Sanesi set one record after another along the Adriatic coast. On the mountainous roads towards Rome, however, an engine failure stopped him. At this point, many favorites had long since left. Paul Metternich had an accident and injured a spectator. Taruffi and Hawthorn had engine failures. Tony Rolt fell far behind after repairing the fuel pump. By the time he was able to start the race again, the roads were open to normal traffic and Rolt had to continue his race at breakneck speed.
In Rome, Karl Kling led ahead of Fangio, Gianni Marzotto and Bracco. But like all the pilots before him who had led in Rome, Kling could not win the Mille Miglia. Back in the north, the race developed into a duel between Fangio and Marzotto. In Florence, the Argentine had a lead of 1 minute and 49 seconds. As far as Brescia, Marzotto not only made up for the deficit, but also won in the end with a lead of 2 minutes and 57 seconds over the Alfa Romeo driver. Paolo Marzotto lost his third place overall 30 kilometers from the finish when a defective fuel line set his Ferrari up in flames.
