Johnny Lockett

John "Johnny" Lockett (born December 8, 1915 - December 8, 2004 ) was a British motorcycle and car racer .

Career

Johnny Lockett began his motorsport career in the 1930s as a motorcycle racer. At the Manx Grand Prix on the Snaefell Mountain Course on the Isle of Man in 1936 he finished fifth in a junior race up to 350 cc on a Norton . In 1937 he was third in the same racing class and a year later in the senior category behind Ken Bill's second. From 1939 Lockett started at the Tourist Trophy . After the Second World War , a traffic accident prevented him from returning to racing in 1947. From 1948 he joined the Norton factory team .

With the introduction of the motorcycle world championship in 1949 , Johnny Lockett was there for Norton as well. After finishing second in the Senior TT behind team mate Harold Daniell, he finished the world championship in the 500 cc class in seventh place overall. In the 350 cm³ class, after third places in the Dutch TT and the Belgian Grand Prix , he was fifth in the championship. His best placement in the world championship was third overall in the 350 cc class in 1951 behind Geoff Duke and William Doran . This year Lockett celebrated a triple Norton victory behind Duke and in front of Jack Brett in the junior TT race and, for the second time in his career, finished second in a TT race.

After the end of motorcycle life in 1951, Johnny Lockett drove automobile races. In 1953 it started at the Mille Miglia , but was canceled. In a factory - Austin-Healey 100 he finished the 24 Hours of Le Mans in twelfth place (his partner was the Dutchman Maurice Gatsonides ) and the 9 Hours of Goodwood in eleventh; there was his partner Ken Rudd .

In 1955 Lockett was one of the drivers who drove the MG EX182 at Le Mans and at the RAC Tourist Trophy . After 1955 he did not contest any more races.
