Mille Miglia 1955
The 22nd Mille Miglia , also XXII Mille Miglia, Coppa Franco Mazzotti, Brescia , took place from April 30 to May 1, 1955 and was the third round of the sports car world championship of that year.
Before the race
When the sports car world championship was introduced in 1953 , the Mille Miglia was given the status of a world championship run. The event was also part of the championship in 1955 . Before the 1000 mile race, two races were held. The season opener, the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires , ended with the surprise victory of the internationally unknown Argentinians Enrique Sáenz-Valiente and José-Maria Ibánez in a Ferrari 375 Plus . The following Sebring 12 hour race was won by Mike Hawthorn and Phil Walters in a Jaguar D-Type registered by Briggs Cunningham .
The race
The Moss Myth
The 1955 Mille Miglia was shaped by the British racing driver Stirling Moss . Even during his playing days, the success of the then Daimler-Benz works driver in this race was one of the greatest successes of his career. Over the years, the success has turned into a myth. In the many decades that have passed since the end of the racing event in 1957 , in contrast to the Moss success in 1955, many triumphs and tragedies before and after faded away. For Alfred Neubauer , the race director at Mercedes-Benz, Moss' performance was the best race of his career, unmatched in perfection and sovereignty. Critics countered that Moss drove his record driving time of 10: 07: 48,000 hours with an average of 157.651 km / h in the best external conditions. In addition, there was the meticulous preparation of his co-driver, the British motorsport journalist Denis Jenkinson , who had recorded the entire course of the route and Moss presented in the style of a rally co-driver . However, the weather conditions were the same for all participants and perfect preparation was just as prohibited as the participation of a competent co-driver.
The lead that Moss was able to pull out over the competition until the finish line was enormous. He distanced his team mate Juan Manuel Fangio , already two-time Formula 1 world champion , by 32 minutes. Third- placed Ferrari factory driver Umberto Maglioli was already 45 minutes behind.
Teams, vehicles and drivers
As in all the years since the event restarted after the end of World War II in 1948 , both professional and amateur racing drivers contested the race. Due to the large number of vehicle classes, the 1000 miles experienced - to the chagrin of many professionals - a flood of reports from amateurs. In 1952 , 502 starters broke the 500 mark in participants on the race weekend. After a decline in the two following years, this number increased to 534 starters in 1955. Organizationally, this number of vehicles was hardly manageable. Ten years after the end of the war, the large number of privately registered Ferraris , Porsches and OSCAs was also an indication that prosperity was taking hold in Europe again.
Mercedes-Benz had returned to international motorsport in 1954 with a works team and, in addition to Formula 1, was also involved in sports car racing. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR made its racing debut at the Mille Miglia . In contrast to the six-cylinder 300 SL road car with gull-wing doors, the SLR was an open two-seater, whose tubular space frame largely corresponded to that of the Formula 1 car. The wheelbase was 2380 mm. A special feature for use in Le Mans was the air brake , a wide shield behind the driver, which could be set up hydraulically in order to drastically increase the air resistance and to support the braking effect of the drum brakes from high speeds. The eight-cylinder F1 engine was expanded to three liters or 2983 cm³ (bore and stroke 78 mm) and developed 266 hp (196 kW) at 7450 rpm. Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio each drove a 300 SLR. Team colleagues Karl Kling and Hans Herrmann drove the 300 SL. There were also two 300 SLs not registered by the works team, which were driven by John Fitsch and Olivier Gendebien .
While Scuderia Ferrari had always brought racing cars with V12 engines to the start at the Mille Miglia , this year they broke with this tradition. The 188 and 121LM each had an in- line six-cylinder engine . While the 118LM was already being driven at the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires , the 121LM made its racing debut at the Mille Miglia. Three 118LMs were prepared for Umberto Maglioli , Piero Taruffi and Paolo Marzotto , while Eugenio Castellotti was entrusted with a 121LM. Another works car, a 750 Monza , was provided for Sergio Sighinolfi .
In addition to an abundance of privately registered A6GCS , only one factory Maserati was registered. Cesare Perdisa drove a 300S . The Maserati 300S was a further development of the Tipo 2500 Sport, which was officially called the Talbot 2500 Sport because it was the result of a collaboration between Maserati and Automobiles Talbot . The construction of the chassis from round and oval tubes was first started at Maserati and then completed at Gilco Design . Giulio Alfieri developed a 3 liter 6 cylinder engine with three Weber carburettors and double ignition. The specified output was 260 hp (191 kW). The gearbox was blocked with the differential . There were transverse leaf springs at the rear and coil springs at the front. The 300S had drum brakes . The light metal housing had perforated cooling fins attached in a star shape.
Aston Martin was represented with a works team at the Mille Miglia for the last time. Two D2 / 4s were reported for Paul Frère and Tommy Wisdom . Peter Collins competed in a DB3S .
The course of the race
Due to the large number of participants, the starting procedure lasted the entire night from Saturday, April 30th to Sunday, May 1st. The first cars started the race on Saturday evening at 9 p.m., the favorites then followed on Sunday morning. Following the tradition of the race, the start numbers corresponded to the start times. The first Mercedes on the launch pad was Juan-Manuel Fangio (start number 658) at 06:58; Karl Kling started at 7:01 a.m., Hans Herrmann at 7:04 a.m. and Moss at 7:22 a.m. In between and afterwards the Ferraris took up the race.
In retrospect, the record drive by Stirling Moss became the dominance of the Mercedes driver from the start to the finish. This representation in the most varied of publications does not coincide with the actual course of the race. The first leader was Ferrari works driver Eugenio Castellotti, who was two minutes ahead of the competition in the 121 LM with 330 hp 4.4 liter engine as far as Ravenna . Castellotti drove the Ferrari spectacularly, but also consistently over the limit, so that the retirement followed in Pescara . Paolo Marzotto, who had a puncture on a long straight to Pescara at a speed of 280 km / h, was only able to enjoy the lead briefly. Marzotto was able to stop the 118 LM without damaging the body. The attempt to change the wheel failed due to the carelessness of the Ferrari mechanics who gave Marzotto a spare wheel with the wrong rim size, which could not be fitted.
Thanks to the faster work of the Mercedes team during the necessary refueling stops, Moss came out on top of the ranking. In L'Aquila he had a lead of 35 seconds over his teammate Hans Herrmann. Taruffi, Fangio and Kling followed. On the way to Rome , Moss began to break away. In the capital, his lead on Taruffi was 1 minute and 26 seconds. Karl Kling had an accident while leaving Rome and retired. The route led back to Brescia via Tuscany and Moss now drove one record time after the other. The only driver who was halfway able to follow him was Hans Herrmann. In Siena there were 5 minutes and 40 seconds between the two Mercedes drivers. On the 70-kilometer section from Siena to Florence , Herrmann lost just eight seconds on Moss. When Herrmann had an accident near Modena , the duel was over. Moss drove unbelievable times on the last sections and when he reached the finish line at 5:29 p.m. all records were broken.
