The Moretti 750 Grand Sport , also Moretti 750 Gran Sport , was a sports car developed by Moretti Fabbrica Automobili e Stabilimenti Carrozzeria in 1953 .

Development history and technology

In 1925 Giovanni Moretti founded a company in Turin that first built motorcycle engines and motorcycles. The development of an automobile followed before the Second World War . After the war, Moretti resumed vehicle production. In 1950 he constructed a 4-cylinder in- line engine , which was installed as a 0.75 liter variant in the central tubular frame of the Grand Sport. A total of ten chassis were built by Moretti, which were bodied by Zagato and Giovanni Michelotti as Spyder and Coupés.

Racing history

Only five races are noted for the 750 Grand Sport. In 1954 , Gino Munaron drove a Grand Sport at the Mille Miglia , but was canceled. 1955 was another Grand Sport at the start in the Italian 1000 mile race. This car, which was piloted by the women's team Lise Renauld and Régine Gordine , the wife of the French film producer Sacha Gordine and sister of Claude Storez , also failed prematurely.

For the 1955 Le Mans 24-hour race , Moretti entered two Grand Sport cars. The pairings Lino Fayen / Herman Rogenry and Giorgio Ubezzi / Mesnest Bellanger were the drivers . Ubezzi and Bellanger had an engine failure during training and were not allowed to race according to the current regulations. Fayen and Rogenry were able to qualify their car, but still did not start the race. Due to circumstances that have not yet been fully clarified, the car was pushed into the starting grid too late. When the event had been going on for several minutes, the vehicle, driver and team members appeared late at the pit facilities. Not surprisingly, officials from the Automobile Club de l'Ouest prevented the team from starting the race.

This was followed by the only placement of a Grand Sport in a sports car race, which shows an eleventh place in the results lists for the US racing driver WR Turner at an event at Montgomery Field Airport near San Diego in 1956. At the 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1956 , two works Grand Sports were again entered. Driven by the French teams Marcel Lauga / Jean-Michel Durif and Marceau Esculus / Francois Guillaud , the team had to give up both vehicles prematurely (each with ignition damage).
