Company history

Carrozzeria Zagato was founded by Ugo Zagato in 1919 . The company is currently run by Andrea Zagato and his wife Marella Rivolta-Zagato in the third generation. The couple transformed the craft business into a modern company.

Ugo Zagato initially relied on lightweight construction and aerodynamics. He soon had success with it. His design ideas led to the collaboration of Zagato with the major Italian brands such as Lancia , Fiat and Alfa Romeo . The Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 SS manufactured in 1928 and the legendary Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 from 1931 became known. Before the Second World War , things got a little quieter around Zagato. During the war, together with Isotta Fraschini, trucks were built.

After the Second World War, work on Gran Turismo models was primarily carried out in the new premises in Via Giorgini 16 in 1946 . Maserati , Abarth , Ferrari and Aston Martin could be won as new customers . In 1962 the company moved to new buildings at Via Arese 30. In the 1960s, Zagato's design was largely determined by Ercole Spada .

In addition to the production of small series of exclusive vehicles and the Zagato Zele , Zagato also dealt with the production of prototypes, of which only one copy was made. Customers here included Ford , Jaguar , MG , Rover , Volvo , Bristol and Rolls-Royce . In the 1990s, it was also developed for Toyota , Nissan and Mercedes-Benz .

There are currently three branches of business:

  • the design department, which employs people from the field of design and production planning. Every order in the field of transport and industrial design can be carried out there, from the rough draft to the finished CAM development.
  • model making, in which samples and models can be quickly produced with modern 5-axis processing machines.
  • prototype production, which uses aluminum, steel or composite material to produce individual prototypes. It is also capable of limited series production.

In addition to the classic business field, the design of passenger cars , Zagato also deals with the design of forklifts and trams (with Bombardier Italiano).
