Carbondio was an Italian company from the automotive industry that completed road vehicles on behalf of small series manufacturers. It also produced individual prototypes. Carbondio had close relationships with the sports car manufacturer Bizzarrini .

Company history

Salvatore Diomante

The company was founded by Salvatore Diomante and Licinio Bonifaci. Salvatore Diomante, who is now a fixture in the field of classic Italian automobiles, began an apprenticeship with the Turin-based car tuner Amandonico around 1955 . In 1963 he moved to Carel SrL, for which he managed individual departments. As a business partner for small series manufacturers, Carel had specialized in completing their vehicles using supplied parts. In 1964, Carel ceased operations.

Carbondio's business model

Around the same time founded the cessation Carels Salvatore Diomante along with his previous work colleague Licinio Bonifaci the company Carbondio, whose name is an acronym of Car rozzeria Bon ifaci Dio is mante.

Carbondio took over the business model and customer base from Carel. Carbondio received the body-in-white and various individual parts from third parties and assembled them into ready-to-drive cars. The company installed hoods, doors, cables, windows and interior fittings; the painting also took place here. Carbondio's customers included Giannini , Intermeccanica (with the coupes and convertibles sold in the USA as the Apollo 5000 GT), Scioneri , Vignale and Zagato .

In 1966, Carbondio built two prototypes of the Sirio sports car for Siva Automobili , the roof concept of which is reminiscent of that of the Bizzarrini 5300 Spyder SI, and show cars such as the Titania Veltro.

Carbondio and Bizzarrini

Carbondio had been closely associated with Bizzarrini since 1966. The relationship began with the Bizzarrini GT 5300 sports car . Giotto Bizzarrini's sports car plant in Livorno had constant difficulties with its bodywork suppliers. The superstructures for the GT 5300 came from Carrozzeria Sports Cars until 1965 , then from BBM , in 1966 and 1967 from Grosso e Vece in Turin and, after their bankruptcy, finally from Subalpina (1968). However, they regularly only supplied the body-in-white. Carbondio completed the standard GT 5300 from 1966 and was also involved in the creation of some special versions. According to Salvatore Diomantes' website, this also includes the 5300 Spyder SI shown at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show , the design of which came from Stile Italia and whose handicraft production is usually attributed to Sibona-Basano . At Carbondio, the other two stylistically and technically different 5300 Targas are said to have been built. Carbondio's involvement in the creation of these open-top cars is insofar as the brand and model chronicles do not mention the company in this context. What is certain, however, is that the first example of the Bizzarrini P 538 as well as the Bizzarrini Manta and some prototypes of the 1900 GT Europa were completed at Carbondio at the end of the 1960s .

Salvatore Diomante came increasingly to the role of production manager for Bizzarrini in the second half of the 1960s. The work processes at Bizzarrini in Livorno and at Carbondio in Turin merged. When Bizzarrini went bankrupt in 1968, the end came for Carbondio. Salvatore Diomante took over the material from Automobili Bizzarrini in the insolvency proceedings, including several unfinished GT 5300 chassis and at least one chassis of the P 538. He brought the material to his newly founded company Autofficina Salvatore Diomante, which was renamed Autocostruzioni SD in 1970 . Carbondio was dissolved in 1969. At Autocostruzioni SD a few GT 5300 and at least one P 538 were completed. SD has been looking after Bizzarrini vehicles and manufacturing spare parts since the 1970s. In addition, the company deals with the restoration of classic sports cars from different manufacturers and builds prototypes and one-offs.

Remarks

  1. Amandonico upgraded mass-produced vehicles like the Fiat 600 technically and stylistically; the company is considered a forerunner of the later tuning industry. See Alessandro Sannia: Enciclopedia dei carrozzieri italiani , Società Editrice Il Cammello, 2017, ISBN 978-8896796412 , p. 83.
