The Carrozzeria Savio is an Italian coachbuilding company , founded 1919th

Company history

The company was founded by the brothers Antonio and Giuseppe Savio. The Carrozzeria Savio was initially based in Turin ; In 1959 the seat was moved to Moncalieri .

In the 1920s and 1930s, Savio manufactured a number of attractive bodies for almost all Italian car brands. Vehicles from Alfa Romeo , Fiat , Isotta Fraschini , Itala and Lancia were equipped with Savio bodies . One of the most independent vehicles was a car based on the Fiat 508 called the Box Body , which stylistically anticipated many features of the later popular off-road vehicles .

During the Second World War , the Carrozzeria Savio primarily manufactured ambulances . After the end of the war, Antonio Savio separated from the company, which was now run by Giuseppe Savio alone and was given the name Stabilimento Savio Giuseppe Carrozziere Automobili . During this time, a primary relationship with Fiat developed . Savio increasingly specialized in the manufacture of ambulances; later, in the 1960s, bodies for buses were added, with the company competing with established plants such as Officine Padane .

In addition, in the 1960s, Savio regularly presented beautiful special bodies based on current Fiat cars . With them, Savio aimed at the same niche that Moretti , Giannini and Vignale (the latter with the Evelyne and Samantha models, among others) served. Unlike these models, however, Savio's constructions were mostly individual pieces, or they were only realized in a few copies at the customer's request. Savio only produced three types of vehicles in larger series.

Savio Jungla

Savio presented the Savio Jungla at the Turin Motor Show in 1965. It was an open leisure car based on the Fiat 600 D. By 1974, around 3200 copies were made.

Savio 126 Jungle

After production of the Fiat 600 was stopped in Italy, Savio developed a similar vehicle based on the (smaller) Fiat 126. The car called Jungle took over the mechanics and drive technology of the Fiat 126, but again had its own open body. Unlike in the case of the Jungla, a roll bar was now permanently installed; the windshield could be folded down like its predecessor. The 3.02 meter long car was only produced in small numbers.

Lancia Delta S4

From 1985 to 1986, Savio produced the Lancia Delta S4 , a car that was extremely successful in rallying, from which a street version was derived.

  • a hatchback coupe with dual round headlights on the basis of the Fiat 125 (1967), which bears some resemblance to the later Opel manta comprising

Savio today

In the 1980s, Savio took over the renowned Carrozzeria Boneschi , which has only existed as a brand since 2006 . Today, numerous special vehicles such as ambulances , armored cash-in-transit vehicles and police vehicles are manufactured.
