Class : Sports car
Body versions : Coupé , cabriolet , roadster

The Toyota MR2 (abbreviation for Midship Runabout Two-seater or Midengined Rearwheel-Drive Two-seater ) is a small two-seater sports car with a mid-engine from the Toyota brand , which was first presented in 1983 at the Tokyo Motor Show. Production took place in a factory owned by Central Motor , which is part of the Toyota Group .

The vehicle rolled off the assembly line in three model generations between November 1984 and July 2007.

In France , the pronunciation of the name MR2 [ ɛm ɛʀ ˈdø ] would be very similar to the word "merde" [ ˈmɛʀd ] ( French for "shit") and the word "merdeux" ( French for "snot spoon"). That is why he is only called MR there. In the USA , the third model series is called MR-S , with the "S" standing for Spyder .

There have been three generations of the MR2 in 23 years, with only the mid-engine and rear-wheel drive in common. The first two generations had pop-up headlights .

In Europe, however, the MR2 was withdrawn from the program in August 2005.

Toyota began planning a concept for a two-seater with a mid-engine and the designation MR2 as early as 1976. This vehicle concept was strongly inspired by European mid-engined vehicles from Lotus or especially the Fiat X1 / 9 , which appeared in autumn 1972 , but with the aim of designing a new, technically superior vehicle. The MR2 should combine the design and driving characteristics of a sports car with the reliability of an everyday vehicle. For this purpose, technically proven elements from the Toyota Corolla were used and combined with a favorable weight distribution and a sports chassis with MacPherson struts front and rear.

The MR2, there was from November 1984 to September 1989 with Targa roof and a coupe , with the coupe in Europe was delivered in March 1985, a removable glass roof. The MR2 W1 is known under the Toyota factory abbreviation AW11.

The following engines were available:

  • 1.5 l carburetor (3A-L) with 61 kW (83 PS; AW10, not in Europe)
  • 1.6-l (4A-GELC) with 85 kW (116 PS) (09 / 1987-09 / 1989; with KAT)
  • 1.6-l (4A-GEL) with 91 kW (124 PS) (11 / 1984–03 / 1988; without KAT)
  • 1.6-l compressor (4A-GZE) with 106 kW (145 PS) (08 / 1987-09 / 1989; not in Germany)

The second MR2 was available with a targa roof and as a coupé . Only the following version was officially sold in Germany from April 1990 onwards: Toyota MR2 (SW20) Targa with the two-liter engine (3S-GE) and 115 kW (156 PS) or 129 kW (175 PS) or 125 kW (170 PS) ) as a result of stricter emissions standards. All other variants are imported vehicles, mostly from the USA and Canada versions with 150 kW (204 PS) and 98 kW (133 PS) were introduced. The 204 hp version has a two-liter turbo engine ( 3S-GTE Gen. II) with 16 valves and a charge air cooler, the version with 133 hp has a naturally aspirated engine (type 5S-FE) with a displacement of 2.2 liters.

Other engines were offered on the Japanese market: from autumn 1989 to early 1992 a 2.0-liter turbo engine ( 3S-GTE Gen. II) with 165 kW (225 hp), then with 177 kW (240 hp) (3S- GTE Gen. III) or 180 kW (245 PS) (3S-GTE Gen. III). In the last model years, a 2.0-liter VVT-i naturally aspirated engine ( 3S-GE Red-Top Gen. IV) with variable valve control was also used in the MR2, which developed 147 kW (200 hp). This engine was never officially offered in the MR2 in Europe.

There was also a version for the English market (model code SW23) with a two-liter naturally aspirated engine (3S-FE) with 94 kW (128 PS), which was the entry-level model on the local market alongside the models available for the German market. This version was only available as a coupé and without a rear spoiler, fog lights and rear storage compartment in the interior.

MR2 (W3, 1999-2007)

3rd generation

Toyota MR2 (1999-2003)

Production period: 1999-2007
Body versions : Roadster
Engines: Otto engine :
1.8 liters (103 kW)
Length: 3895 mm
Width: 1695 mm
Height: 1240 mm
Wheelbase : 2450 mm
Empty weight : 1050 kg

After the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995, the future of the MR2 was uncertain. There was speculation that the tradition of a Toyota sports car should not be continued.

Although no official decision had yet been made, the development team led by chief engineer Tadashi Nakagawa set about developing a new, lightweight sports car, the MR2 Roadster . Again the basic idea of the first MR2, only this time it came onto the market as an open roadster at the end of 1999.

The four-cylinder engine had a displacement of 1.8 liters (1794 cm³) and an output of 103 kW (140 hp), with which it sprinted from 0-100 km / h in 7.9 s. Its top speed was 210 km / h.

In spring 2003 it received a facelift that brought headlights with clear glass optics and modified rear lights. The engine and power were retained.

The last MR2 was built from late 1999 to July 2007. It was only available as a roadster , but it could be retrofitted with a hardtop .

In Germany it was deleted from the offer in August 2005.

Edition S

In the last (European) model year 2005, Toyota launched a special edition limited to 100 pieces called Edition S on the German market. Special extras were the Mica paintwork, 17-inch wheels, sports suspension, a sports rear silencer, leather upholstery and a number plate on the center console. All accessories came from TTE .

TTE Turbo Kit

TTE turbo in the MR2 W3

At the Essen Motor Show 2003, the in-house Toyota tuner TTE presented a turbo kit for the MR2 Roadster. The interest was so great that the decision was made to start a small series production. From 2006 onwards, TTE in Cologne-Marsdorf was able to retrofit its MR2 W3. In this case, the full factory warranty was retained. TTE also took care of the TÜV approval and the necessary entries in the vehicle documents.
