Toyota Sequoia Limited (2001-2004)

The Toyota Sequoia is an SUV manufactured by Toyota at their Princeton, Indiana plant. The Tundra- derived car was introduced in 2000 as the 2001 model. In terms of price, it is between the smaller 4Runner and Toyota's flagship Land Cruiser .

The Sequoia is the largest SUV currently being sold under the Toyota name because it is slightly larger than the Land Cruiser, seats 8 people instead of 7 and has more luggage space behind the third row of seats. However, it does not have the sophisticated, permanent all-wheel drive that the Land Cruiser is known for.

In 2009 the Sequoia will be sold exclusively in the USA , Canada , Mexico and the Middle East .

The Sequoia was first shown in auto showrooms in 1999 and 2000; Series production began at the end of 2000 as the 2001 model. It shared engines, drivetrain and some body parts with the Tundra, as did the chassis with the exception of the rear disc brakes and the more complex multi-link rear axle. The Sequoia was nominated for the 2001 North American Truck of the Year award. In 2005 it received a facelift and a more powerful engine with variable valve control (VVTi), LED taillights and a 5-stage automatic instead of the previous 4-stage. The Sequoia is slightly longer than the Land Cruiser, but this is hardly noticeable. When it was first introduced, it was larger than the contemporary Chevrolet Tahoe and the same size as the Ford Expedition . Its V8 engine was classified as particularly fuel-efficient. Frames and driveshafts are manufactured by Dana Incorporated .

The Sequoia comes in two trim levels, SR5 and Limited . The SR5 is priced at $ 32,820, and prices for the Limited start at $ 41,855. The cars are available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive .

Toyota introduced the 2008 model Sequoia at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show ; sales began the following December. The new model is again based on the tundra. The main differences are a frame completely built into the body, a rear independent wheel suspension on double wishbones and coil springs (for better driving comfort and space saving) and a limited slip differential on the all-wheel drive models. The new chassis ensures a smaller turning circle of 11.6 m and enables the rear bench to be folded down flat. Toyota stated that the new frame is 70% stiffer against straight bending and 30% stiffer against torsional forces than the old one. The drag coefficient has been reduced to 0.35.

The drive has also been improved: a ULEV-II-compatible 5.7-liter V8 engine, type Toyota 3UR-FE, in conjunction with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The 2008 model is available in three equipment lines: As before, the SR5 and the Limited; new is the platinum . Prices range from US $ 34,000 to US $ 55,000, depending on the model and equipment. The basic engine is the ULEV-compatible 4.7 l V8, type Toyota 2UZ-FE, with 276 hp (206 kW) from the previous model. The 4.7L V8 comes standard on the SR5 model, while the Limited and Platinum have the 5.7L V8. All-wheel drive is available for all models.

The interior of the Sequoia, model 2008, has the same dashboard as in the new Tundra. The following are also supplied as standard: a steering column adjustable in height and inclination, electric windows, electric door locks with remote control and two sun visors. A DVD-based navigation system, a reversing camera with a 7 ″ screen, a DVD video system for the rear seat passengers, a JBL audio system with 14 speakers and heated seats with fans are available as options (standard for the Platinum equipment line). The Limited has remote controls for air conditioning, audio system and the Bluetooth telephone, an improved JBL audio system, electroluminescent Optitron controls, electrochromatic dimming interior mirrors and exterior mirrors with HomeLink receivers. The Platinum model has a DVD-based navigation system, a reversing camera, rear air suspension (to be lowered for easier loading) and adaptive cruise control as standard .

There are eight seats in the equipment lines SR5 and Limited and seven for the Platinum. The Platinum is also equipped with a rear seat bench that can be electrically folded down at a ratio of 60:40. The permissible trailer load is higher than any other SUV.

The external differences include the color of the door handles (in the body color for the SR5 and chrome-plated for the Limited and Platinum), 20 ”aluminum rims for the Platinum and heated exterior mirrors with remote control.

The following are supplied as standard: stability control (VSC), anti-lock braking system (ABS), brake assist (BAS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), side airbags at the front and curtain side airbags for all three rows of seats. In the 2010 model, knee airbags were also added for the driver and front passenger.

Crash test ratings 2008 by the NHTSA :
Front impact driver: 5 Stars
Frontal collision passenger: 4 stars
Side impact driver: Not checked
Side impact passenger: Not checked
Rollover: 4 stars

Changes from model year to model year

  • In the 2009 model there was a 5.7 liter V8 engine that was suitable for ethanol (E85).
  • In the 2010 model, the 4.7-l V8 engine was replaced by the completely new 4.6-l V8, which is connected to a 6-speed automatic. The Limited is equipped with a navigation system, DVD video system for the rear seat passengers and only seven seats. Knee airbags for the driver and front passenger were added. The Platinum received wood applications on the steering wheel and gear knob; the SR5 has Bluetooth and remote control for the audio system as standard. The exterior color "Timberland Mica" gives way to the exterior color "Spruce Mica" (fir green) of the Camry . All audio systems are equipped with USB ports and can be connected to an iPod . The interior mirror in the Limited has an integrated screen for the reversing camera.

In a comparative test by the car magazine '' Motor Trend '', the Sequoia took first place.
