Johann Christoph Windisch (* 1654 in Weiden ; † November 16, 1728 in Mockersdorf ) was a school teacher and organist, sculptor and carpenter.

He was born in Weiden in 1654 as the son of a farrier and died on November 16, 1728 in Mockersdorf, where he is also buried. His wife Barbara was a daughter of the town clerk Ludwig Schepper from Erbendorf .

Johann Christoph Windisch worked as a school teacher and organist in his home town of Mockersdorf. But he was particularly known as a sculptor and carver of remarkable acanthus altars. His son Sigmund , who was born on February 11, 1709 in Mockersdorf, followed in these footsteps .

Akantus altar in Reuth

One of his main works is the monstrance-shaped high altar made of acanthus carvings in the Reuther Church of St. Katharina , which was built between 1717 and 1720.

The altarpiece shows Saint Catherine, the picture above the adoration of the Magi. The idea of using the Mediterranean acanthus plant as an imaginatively carved framework for the creation of the altar, as it corresponded to a carving art from Bohemia , is original . The carving was refined by adding sunflowers, rose and thistle blossoms to the acantus tendrils.

The Catholic Church of St. Katharina in Reuth was built not far from the castle as a castle chapel. It was built in 1717 at the time of the lord of the palace, Johann Christian Ernst von Sparneck .
