Sigmund Windisch (born February 11, 1709 in Mockersdorf ; † February 9, 1787 in Erbendorf ) was a sculptor and carpenter from the Upper Palatinate .

life and work

Sigmund Windisch was born on February 11, 1709 as the son of Johann Christoph Windisch and his wife Barbara in Mockersdorf and died on February 9, 1787 in Erbendorf .

Like his father, Sigmund Windisch became known as a sculptor and carver, especially of a remarkable acanthus altar in the Catholic Church of Thumsenreuth .

Acanthus altars can also be found in other places in the Upper Palatinate, for example in Reuth or in the castle church in Poppenreuth . The acanthus plant served as a template for the late Baroque art of carving, with the often spreading and gilded tendrils framing a central motif.

Akantus altar in Thumsenreuth

One of the main works of Sigmund Windisch is the acanthus carved altar, which is now in the Catholic Church in Thumsenreuth and comes from the secular church of St. Veit in Erbendorf . The “parish seat” of Erbendorf was originally the St. Vitus Church in the Altenstadt district.

The monstrance-shaped fourteen helper altar was created in 1750 by J. Paul Fichtacher (painter) and Sigmund Windisch (sculptor). The altar was built around a figure of St. Vitus (around 1500), which is surrounded by the busts of the other fourteen helpers in need. The Mediterranean acanthus plant was used as an imaginatively carved framework in the creation of the altar, as it corresponded to a carving art from Bohemia .

The Catholic Church in Thumsenreuth was built in 1935. In addition to the Church of St. Katharina in Reuth , it houses one of the most beautiful acanthus altars in the Upper Palatinate.
